18- 'Admiral Best, 62; Fought at Jutland British Officer Won Many Honors in Long Career London, Oct. 15-Admiral Sir Matthew Best, retired, awarded the Distinguished Service Order for participation in the Battle of Jutland, died Sunday at the age of 62. He retired last year after a long period of service which culminated in achieving the rank of full admiral in 1936. He had served as commodore and chief of staff to the commander of the Atlantic fleet, rear admiral commanding a cruiser squadron of the Atlantic fleet, vice admiral in charge of Malta and commander-in-chief of the American and West Indies station. Sir Matthew was a Knight Commander of the Bath, a member of the Royal Victoria Order, a companion of the Distinguished Service Order and a companion of the Bath.

In 1935 he visited New York aboard his flagship, the heavy cruiser York, and on that occasion urged closer co-operation between the United States and England for the "well-being of the world." Mrs. A. C. Cooper Leaves $10,000 Mrs. Amelia C.

Cooper, prominent for many years in Brooklyn musical affairs and a pioneer in furthering the work of the Y. W. C.A., left an estate of about $10,000 in real and personal property, according to a petition to probate her will, filed today in Surrogate Court. She died Sept. 23 while visiting a niece in Troy, N.

Y. The will leaves $300 outright and a $6,000 trust fund for Kate McNichols, with whom she had lived at 1246 President $100 to three Lutheran churches -Epiphany of 721 Lincoln Place, St. Paul's of S. 5th and Rodney Sts. and St.

John's of Canajoharie, N. $800 to Bernard Keyser of Jersey City, $100 to Lena Bradford of the Brooklyn Baptist Home, $800 to May Krumenaux of Nutley, N. and $300 to Mrs. William Keyser of Nutley; $100 and jewelry to Ina M. Burke of 33 Jewel Forest Hills, and the residue equally to a sister and ten nieces and nephews in Schenectady and Troy, N.

Mrs. Caroline H. Smith Mrs. Caroline H. Smith of 2107 Cropsey who died Sept.

28, left about $19,000, according to a petition to probate her will. The will leaves $100 each to two friends -Ruth Gallagher of the Cropsey Ave. address and Hallock Kipp of 8774 Bay Parkway--and the residue to a daughter, Daphne C. Smith, with whom she had lived. Max Greene Max Greene, also known As Greenberg, who died Sept.

22, left his entire estate to his widow, Mrs. Edna Greene, 1747 E. 24th St. HELEN SIMPSON London, Oct. death of Helen De elist, was announced today.

She was 42. Miss Simpson was the author of a number of novels, in addition to which she collaborated with Clemence Dane in writing others. Her publications included "Boomerang," in 1932, which won the Black Memopublished, rial prize. Works produced with Clemence Dane were "Enter Sir John," "Printer's Devil" and "Reenter Sir John." Miss Simpson was married in 1927 to Denis Browne, a London surgeon. They had one child, a daughter.

James Actor 50 Years Supported Anna Held, Edwin Booth, Other Stars Funeral services for James Bradbury, veteran actor, who died Saturday on his 83d birthday at a private home for actors at 60 Townsend Clifton, S. will be held at noon tomorrow at Walter B. Cooke's Funeral Chapel, 117 W. 72d Manhattan, under the auspices of Actors Fund of America. Cremation will follow at Ferncliff.

For a number of years, after his retirement, Mr. Bradbury lived at the Percy Williams Home in East Islip, moving to Staten Island a few weeks ago. During his half a century on the stage Mr. Bradbury was noted particularly for his vigorous portrayal of American characters. One of his most successful parts was Capt.

Sam Hunniwell in Joseph C. Lincoln's comedy "Shavings," produced in 1923 at the Bijou Theater. He appeared for several seasons in support of Anna Held, and was also in such comedies as "Fifty Miles From Boston," "Is Matrimony a Failure?" "Along Came Ruth," "Have a Heart," "Inside the Lines," "Blackbirds" and "Oh, Boy!" In later years he joined the trek to Hollywood, where he appeared one picture with Richard Dix. His pictures included "Scarlet Seas," in which he supported Richard Barthelmess, a star with whom his son, the late James Bradbury had been featured in the West Point picture, "Classmates." Stafford, 47, of 18 E. 94th Manhattan, and a Summer resident of Southampton, died in the Southampton Hospital yesterday after a week's illness. He formerly was a member of the Manhattan real estate firm of Stafford Stafford, which later became known as Stafford Port.

Since his retirement from the latter firm he had been associated with Gardiner Gilsey in the real estate business in Southampton. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alice Chambers Stafford; son, Robert and his mother, Mrs. Stafford Murphy, all of Manhattan. Services will be held at St.

Driggs of 726 Ocean Ave. died this morning in Roosevelt Hospital after an illness of about four months. She was 80 and had been a lifelong resident of Brooklyn. Despite her age, Mrs. Driggs continued, until her last illness, her activity in charitable and welfare work particularly on behalf of boys.

She was secretary of the Flatbush Boys Club and past president of its Woman's Auxiliary and worked with the boys directly in the Tillicums, one of the clubs in Boys Club, devoted to giving recognition for outstanding achievements in sports. She was for about 40 years treasurer of the Needlework Guild of Flatbush and was a member of the Cosmos Club. Mother of Golfer Mrs. Driggs was the mother of Edmund H. Driggs noted golfer and, in his student years, football and baseball player at Adelphi Academy and Princeton University.

She also leaves another son, A. R. Mulkins; her husband, Edmund H. Driggs; four grandchildren, Edmund H. Driggs 3d; Dixon W.

Driggs, Patricia H. Driggs and Jean Emily Dodd, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fairchild Chapel, 86 Lefferts Place. Burial will be private in Cypress Hills Cemetery.

Daniel F. Clark, Retired Fireman Special to the Brooklyn Eagle Freeport Oct. 15-Daniel F. Clark, 77, a retired member of the New York City Fire Department, with which he had served for 45 years, died today at his home, 32 Lexington here, after a long illness. Mr.

Clark was born in Elgin, and lived in Freeport for 30 years. During most of his years in the Fire Department he was attached to Engine Company 218, in the Bushwick section. He was a member of the New York City Fire Department Twenty- Year Men's Ass0ciation and the Fire Department Benevolent Association. He leaves four daughters, Mrs. Esther Zschorna and Mrs.

Marguerite Heste of Brooklyn, and Mrs. Agnes Ellison and Miss Virginia Clark of Freeport; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Cyrus H. Cole, Ex- Sales Manager Special to the Brooklyn Eagle Patchogue, Oct, 15 Cyrus H. Cole, former sales manager in the New York office of the Atlas land Cement Company, died yesterday at his home here at the age of 64.

He was born in New York City and was the cement company for 20 years, retiring in 1930. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Mary T. St. John Cole; a daughter, Mrs.

C. E. Connery of Baldwin, and two sisters, Mrs. F. H.

St. John of Palisades, N. and Mrs. Thomas Pugh of New York. Edwin P.

Norwood Old Lyme, Oct. 15-Edwin P. Norwood, former press agent for Ringling Brothers Circus and onetime special representative for Maude Adams, died Sunday night at his home here at the age of 59. Born in Cucamonsa, Mr. Norwood became a newspaperman at an early age.

In 1905 he became a press agent for amusement resorts and for ten years, ending in 1927, was in charge of publicity for the Ringling circus. He also wrote a number of books for children, based on his circus experience. For the last four years he had been managing director of the Lyme Art Association. His wife, the former Ann Bussert, concert and opera singer, survives. Edgar Davis Edgar Davis, treasurer and director of the Ingersoll-Rand Company, died early yesterday in the New York Hospital after a brief illness.

He was 59 and had been with the company, manufacturers of industrial machinery, for 40 years. His home for the last year was at 575 Park Manhattan. Mr. Davis was a member of the Hudson River Country Club, the American Yacht Club and the Downtown Athletic Club. He leaves his widow.

15, 1940 Mrs. Catherine McGowan Mrs. Catherine McGowan, mother of Capt. John J. McGowan of the New York Police Department, who as commanding officer of the Brooklyn homicide squad played an important part in the investigation of the -Money ring, died yesterday.

She was the widow of Hugh McGowan. In addition to the captain she leaves another son, Hugh T. McGowan, and a daughter, Mrs. Arthur B. Sheehan.

The funeral will take place at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from her residence, 130 93d thence to St. Patrick's R. C. Church.

W. J. Zirkelbach, World War Veteran William J. Zirkelbach, of 70-11 Myrtle Glendale, a veteran of the World War, died yesterday at a local hospital. He was 43.

He was a member of Ruppert Memorial Post 1226, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and of Bottlers Drivers Union, Local 96. He leaves his wife, Caroline Pfister Zirkelbach; four children, Irene, Frederick. Theaters and Equity Sign Year's Agreement The League of New York Theaters yesterday ratified a basic agreement with Actors Equity Association under which relations between actors and producers will be governed for one year.

The agreement includes a clause permitting Sunday shows at regular wages, instead of double pay, until June 1, 1941, and grants an increase of from $40 to $50 a week in minimum pay for actors and actresses on contracts signed on and after Dec. 1. Leopold A. Lifschutz Funeral services were held Sunday for Leopold A. Lifschutz, operator of the Genadeen Hotel at Far Rockaway, who died Saturday after a short illness.
