Fish are plentiful enough, but attendance, even of the dyed-in-the-wool Winter fishermen, has been practically nil, all scared off by the bad weather. This combination has given the fishing skippers a ter rific beating, and very few have seen enough action to sail. The next meeting of the Sportsmen's Council, Marine District of will be held at 8 p.m. next Wednesday at the Hotel Empire, Broadway and 63d St Application was received from the Babylon Tuna Club, which was voted into member ship.

The Council's bill requiring that sports fishermen lie gov erned by the same minimum length limits as commercial fishermen, is now in the hands of the State Legislature. In reference to the Ross bill Jake Risks Crown For TV's $75,000 Chicago, Feb. 2 (U.R) Middle weight champion Jake LaMotta is risking his championship against welterweight titleholder Ray (Sugar) Robinson because television is guaranteeing him an estimated $75,000, it appeared today. LaMotta and Robinson showed up before the Illinois Boxing Commission yjsterday to sign contracts for the bout. The written agreements called for 45 percent of the net gate to La.

Motta, who is risking the loss of his crown, and 15 percent to the challenger, Robinson. But LaMotta later confirmed that he had been given a flat 'Guarantee' to risk his cham pionship, and when queried as to the amount, he said "that's mv secret." Informed sources said, how ever, they understood that Lar ruping Jake was handed a $75,000 melon by the sponsoring International Boxing Club, with television underwriting the risky total sum. The Chicago Stadium, with tickets scaled at $20, $15, $10 and $5, would reach a net gate of about $230,000, should there be a sellout. Should that figure be reached, LaMotta would be paid $10.1,500. But none of the boxing insid ers expected a sellout, and the highest estimate anyone would make of the net was $150,000.

Even this would pay LaMotta less than his $75,000 guarantee. The gilt-edge affair most exclusive on the continent will bring together the royalty of 1C5 breeds and varieties, all of them top prize winners in other American or Canadian shows.

As in the past 14 years, there are more boxers and dachshunds entered in the show than any other breed, with collies next in popularity. This year dachshunds lead the field with loO entries. Bernese in Debut For the first time in the show's history a Bernese moun tain dog has been entered. He is a big dog with a black coat, white patches and required brown coloring. Visitors with an eye for near-perfection may wander through the lower levels of the Garden and observe the dogs in their stalls while they are not being judged.

Owners or handlers will always be around to an swer questions and the more than 40 exhibition booths will be staffed by experts on every phase of the canine world. One of the features of the show's second day will be a pointing and retrieving exhibi tion by field dogs at work with live birds, with a running com mentary by the well-known actor-c ommentator, Robert Montgomery, who is an out standing sportsman. mere will ne nine tiogs ana big dogs at the show, ranging from the eight-ounce Chihua hua to the 200-pound St. Ber nard. And there will be plenty of rarely seen and exotic breeds, like the aristocratic Borzoi and the Komondor, which looks like a shag rug; the Affenpin- scher.

Bernard Schwarz of the Coney Island Rod and Cun Club came out on top in the trials for the Angler-swimmer contest to be held at the coming Sportsman Show.

Ken D'Amica will be his alternate. These two huskies should show well in the affair. At a recent meeting of the Metropolitan Rod and Gun Club, we noticed that the new president, Ray Ferguson, makes a fine presiding officer. Ed Bostonian, new house chairman, mixes his slave driving with the old oil, and gets a lot of work done. Abe Weiner, pistol chairman, keeps his teams busy and successful; Ed Humsji will again be in charge at the club booth at the Sportsman Show; Pop Rathcamp is working on another one of his artistic decoration schemes for the booth, and every member seems to be on the job as always.

This may not appear to be the right kind of weather to suggest it, but Spring football practice is hardly a month away. Some colleges will start with real zing, like Fordham. Others will be like Columbia, hoping that a very disappointing frosh team will turn up some keen individuals which 6ort of thing happens quite often. Last' year's Fordham frosh equad provides five young men most useful where they'll be needed most. To make up the loss of the skillful Doheny, there's a brilliant youngster from Cincinnati, Roger Franz to help Tom Drake, now a Junior.

Much of the 1950 Ram scoring punch was the Doheny-to-Pfeifer pass. Pfeifer graduated. But along came Bill Parulis and Bill Nielsen. Only sophs, to be true. But they have shown talent at offensive end.

So have two youngsters, Joe Yalch of Berwick and Fred Rossetti, aspirants for other positions. Most of the N.Y.U.'a frosh talent will fit at guard, tackle or end. The Violet has need of them right there. April 7 is the day set for the Carolina Cup races at Camden, S. C.

There'll be a whale of a lot more horses and a tremendous amount of better racing around these parts but not the same picture about a square mile of cleared rolling land among big pines. Add a series of race courses with all sorts of jumps and hurdles, all in one general scheme but blocked out by movable rails into different types of tests. There's no clubhouse, which makes it club-bier because the attendees just roll their car noses to the fence, open up the luggage compartment and eat chuck-wagon style. No pari-mutuals. Just furtive bookies who get pinched after the first race, released by the third to make up their fines, I assume, with murderous prices.

The whole scene is without that terrific tensity of finely organized, high-pressure racing. You probably lose money at Camden, Hardly a doubt about that. But nobody bets much. The biggest thrills are the rooting interest in horses, riders or owners one knows. That was the picture.

Maybe it will still be. Camden was a pretty, sleepy little town. But DuPont has built a terrific factory for making some relative of nylon. With it has come one of those housing developments. Maybe the show will never be the same.

It might not be the same at easier-going Aiken either. Aiken is also getting some tremendous factory. Wonder what's the attraction, the water or the horses which do fjive the illusion of a tremendous number of unemployed, temporarily at least, and who, very soon, might have to go to work and make some money. There's been some talk, for almost three years, about staging a medal golf championship on Long Island. Amateurs ordinarily shy away from the continued pressure of medal golf.

But not when they get good. Having a better grade of errilf nn the Island than ever. this looks like the year the championship will start. The plan is 54 holes, three rounds. A two-day job.

With both a scratch and handicap side, it ought to be a lot of fun with weary lot at the end. Medal golf is exhausting, but good. Six U. S. Track Stars To Compete Abroad Six American track and field stars will visit Scotland and England next June, Dr.

Lloyd Olds, chairman of the Na tional A. A. U. track and field committee, announced today. Dr.

The trip will open in Glasgow on June 6 and there will be sub eequent appearances in Liver pool and Birmingham. A visit to Ireland also is under con 6ideration.
