Harold Jr. also basked in tha glare of the spotlight at St Augustine's High as a C. H. S. A.

220-yard titlist and record breaker in the furlong, whose mark was eradicated by Vernon Dixon of Loughlin. Harold Jr. also acquired national fame as a high jumper and broad jumper. Young Gene is a more versatile performer than either his dad or brother. He is a junior and an honor student, despite the strenuous athletic program he is following.

Before he graduates he bids fair to be classed with the best the Blue and White Eagles have ever developed and they have turned out some dandies. BUDDING HIGH JUMPER In his workouts of late, Gene has been hitting close to six feet in the high jump, and Coach Murtha Lawrence feels confident that he can draw down top honors in the C. H. S. A.

A. city championships at the Garden a week from Saturday. He took fourth place in the national interstholastic games in the Garden last Saturday with a clearance of 5 feet 9 inches. Like his brother he is a furlong sprinter and to date his best time is 0:23.8, much slower than Harold best time, but he is rapidly improving and expects to have it below 0:22 before he graduates from the interscholastic ranks. Furthermore, he is a valuable member of the relay teams and did himself proud on the third leg of the mile foursome which placed second in the nationals.

GOOD ON DIAMOND, COURT Brooklyn Prep is deprived of the service of a sterling baseball and basketball player because Gene features track. With the Czars in the Junior Division of the Ice Cream League at the Parade Grounds last season, Gene was rated one of the most dependable outfielders and timely hitters in the loop. His mark was above the charmed .300 circle. The youngster, who lives with his parents at 1181 President St. and attends St.

Ignatius Church, has been a mainstay on the basketball court with the Squires, who operate at the Columbus Caseys. His speed and accurate shooting have the Casey members wondering why he never turned out for the Brooklyn Prep varsity quintet. Gene, who is a nephew of Jim Quinn, ex-Holy Cross luminary, a 100-yard sprinter on Uncle Sam's Olympic team in 1928, originally wanted to be an electrical engineer, but he now has his heart set on becoming a doctor. FUTURE GREAT Bob Welsh, brother of Jim Welsh, pitcher of the St. John's University baseball nine, is playing a bang-up game with the St.

Francis of Assisi grammar school team in C. Y. 0. basketball Bob is sure to be heard from in the future on the high school and college courts. Because of the heavy rain Wednesday night, the distribution of awards won last season will be made by the Coney Island Baseball League in the Ketchem-Hen-nessey Post headquarters, 2865 W.

15th Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Gil Hodges of the Dodgers will make the presentations if ha isn't called South by the Dodgers in the meantime. The team winners, Cyclones (Senior Division), Nathan's Famous (Junior titlist) and the Stillwells (Grasshopper ruler), will receive trophies, and the members of each of the championship aggregations will get tie clasps. GIANTS GRAB LOCALS Two Brooklyn boys, recommended by Scout Gene Bonnabeau, have been signed' by the Giants following tryouts at the Sanford, camp. The players are Larry De Vita, a left-handed pitcher of 292 Bay 19th and Arthur Schwartz, an outfielder of 271 Sullivan Place, right in the shadows of the Dodgers' home at Ebbets Field.

De Vita, although a southpaw, bats right-handed. He established an enviable record with Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park and with the Cliyennes of the Shore Parkway League. De Vita has been assigned to Lenoir of the Western Carolina League. Schwartz, who performed for Erasmus Hall High School, is 19 years old, six feet in height and tips the beam at 155 pounds. Schwartz, who clubs and throws from the port side, also did his stuff for Lenny Morris' Daytons of the Parade Grounds from 1946 to 1949.

The Giants have signed Schwartz to an Oshkosh contract. MAKES WHO'S WHO Frank M. Downing of Brooklyn, former All-Scholastic passing star of Brooklyn Tech, who also made an enviable record on the grid at Lafayette College, is one of the latter institution's 26 seniors who have been selected by Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. One is chosen on a basis of scholarship, leadership, citizenship and promise. Downing is freshman backfield coach at Lafayette, a member of the Student Council, Maroon Key Society, Knights of the Round Table and Delta Upsilon.
