XstCOPT TOLC FIB 2 8 1951. 288448 xB 28 1951. Coach 'h a Bigshot and Swell Guy--for the Fixers EXCLUSIVE! How can a coach control a game for the gamblers make a killing? There are ways. He can do it by ordering his players to shoot or not to shoot, all depending on the type of fix operating that night He can order fouls to De waived or fouls to be shot, all depending on the score and the point-spread. He can bench his stars or keep them in the game, once more depending on the way he wants to control the final count in the books.

Forty-eight hours before that certain game, Coach took his short drive away from the campus. He went into a private telephone liooth and called New York. No long conversation was necessary. "We'll go under the point spread on Tuesday," he said. That's all.

Within minutes the nationwide ring of gamblers were Continued on Page 11 notes. 'Like a professor, revealing treasured information, these men realize Coach XHas all the answers at his fingertips and so his words become precious pearls of wisdom. Coach is no stranger to New York. He and his teams have appeared at Madison Square Garden many times. Year in and year out, they have been among the best in the nation and these quintets invariably have won the acclaim of both the press and spectators with their excellent brand of basketball.

That his superiors in college have recognized Coach. as a brilliant leader is evidenced by the fact that he receives a handsome salary, that he is given a fine home and that he has the choice of any number of leading schoolboy stars to develop for future, stardom. Yet Coach is linked hand in hand with the widespread operatfons of the gambling ring which is currently being investigated by District Attorney Hogan. He "fixes" games 'for the gamblers. winning teams to the" college, with the resulting bigger student body and bigger revenues and new buildings including the imposing field house.

Everybody knows all that. But everybody doesn't know that, just before a certain big game, Coach drove out to the country, found a telephone and called a certain number and said: "We'll keep within the six-point margin." Meaning that his team would win but by six points or less, making a gamblers' Roman holiday. But it happened. Immaculate, polished and dignified, this mentor has been established as a paragon of ideals and brilliance for young newcomers in the field, and one of the top men in his profession. When Coach rises to his feet to discuss basketball whether it be at rallies, luncheons or meetings the audience invariably listens with deep silence.

There is a certain basketball coach at a certain college with a beautiful campus hundreds of miles from Brooklyn. He is a respectable and respected coach. The campus has an imposing field house a glorified gymnasium with 12,000 seats which jack built. That is, the jack that comes from college sports, mainly basketball. The coach, whom we may call Coach is highly esteemed, almost revered, by faculty and students alike.

player, who, it is now evident, is talking about game "fixing" activities in a season as towhich he had before this kept mum. Once having broken into that area, District Attorney Hogan's men and Gard it issaid, cannot stop with the arrest of one man. Basketball games are not thrown by one player and Miller, charged with taking $1,500 for a couple of games, was never a big enough star and a good enough basketball artist, sports experts declare, to assure the professional gamblers who paid him that he, unaided, could deliver the goods. One swallow doesn't make a Summer nor one paid player a "fix." If there was one businessman in the 1948-M9 and even 1947-'48 seasons, there were others, police believe. Until he was recalled for more questioning, Gard had evidently been attempting to shield them in his revelations to the prosecutor's men.

But now that he has named one, others are regarded as certain to follow. Miller became involved in the disclosures because he was Card's best friend. They went to high school together, played on the same teams, were friends for years. Both men played in the December, 1948, games and Gard, called the go-between In the later games involving other L.
