MISSION HEADQUARTERS Catheral at Yuanling, center of a Passionist missionaries' diocese in Hunan Province, as it appears in one of the Rev.

Quentin B. Olwell's personal photographs. Behind edifice and other mission buildings is Yuan River. China in '23 Had Bandits--and Reds Continued from Page In 1926, while I was on a brief visit to the main mission to replace a hospitalized missionary, a great smallpox epidemic broke out. At the mission we had an orphanage of 80 Chinese kids.

them contracted that dread, scourge. In the town where the mission located, hundreds hundreds of men, women and children died on the streets. In the orphanage I had a day and night job our help had fledwashing the poor tykes who were covered with ugly pustules with mineral oil. Frightful Disease I didn't lose one of those orphans. But one morning, after the epidemic had subsided, I awoke and looked in the mirror.

My face was all spotted and I knew I had smallpox. What didn't know, thank God, was that it was black smallpox, an even more frightful disease than I had seen. I was unconscious for 21 days, but until my hands were bound several days later I still scratched the feverish sores on my body. I still bear the marks. As far as I know, only one other white man has ever survived black smallpox in China.

He is a Ford salesman in Shanghai, and we later got together to celebrate our awful and wonderful experience. Communist Contacts Two months later I was able to return to my station, and within the year I made my first contacts with Chinese Communists. Most I've found, think of Red Americanese movement as a recent thing. In 1927, almost a quarter of a century ago, I ran into it. The Chinese Communist movement began only a few years after the Bolshevik Revolution.

Sun Yat-sen, who aspired to the formation of a democratic Chinese nation, was forced by American and British apathy into an alliance with Red Chinese. Sun's military leader was a Chinese who has become the most controversial figure of his people in the thousands of years of their history. He was Chiang Kai-shek. His alliance with the Chinese Communists is a story in itself. Tomorrow: An opium blaze spells freedom.
