"I don't know whether there's any story In this or not," he would invariably preface his interviews with the press. Yet there always was a story. Often there were two stories a double-header that wasn't played in the morning and afternoon. Down at St.

Pete recently at the Winter baseball meetings the writers were Just a bunch of starving Armenians, eagerly scrabbling around the hotel lobby at headquarters for a crumb of news. No trades, no hlrings, no firings. But that was before the Mahatma showed up at the convention with his Pirate retinue. He received the newspapermen in his shirtsleeves, a stubble of beard on his chin, dog-tired. Half an hour later, the boys had their big story.

Rickey contradicted Commissioner Happy Chandler on what would happen to the game if total mobilization came to the country and brought in his tail-end Pirates with humor and frankness. He clothes his words in picturesque language. "There must be an election of professions," he told Manager Leo Durocher at Bear Mountain years ago when he thought the was dividing his time between the Dodgers and his radio broadcast commitments to the detriment of the ball club. "Luck Is the residue of design," was another Rickey way of saying a commonplace bromide that a smart man makes his own breaks. He spoke of his rookies who could run as having steel springs in their legs.

He made the strike zone a byword 'of the garne. "The Pirates, I've learned. finished last on their merits," was I his St. Pete classic. The skeptics of the press have frequently denounced his smart sayings for doubletalk.

But he's an artist at rolling words around his tongue. He deals in parables, not always gleaned from the Bible. He doesn't always want to be quoted. He regrets that the Pittsburgh merit crack found its way into print. But within reason he never complained about what was written about him in Brooklyn.

Only once did he ask a writer to apologize for something lie wrote. The Mahatma Is an expert at fencing with a questioner and it takes a real smartie to trap him into an admission. He would have made a great witness in court and if he ever decides to quit baseball could easily land a Job as a Hollywood gag writer. Yet there are times when his sense of humor fails him and he will just stare at you blankly and make you wonder if what you had said was so funny, after all. His laugh is an inward chuckle of appreciation, even when the joke is on him.

His hearing isn't perfect and he asks to have the question repeated. If he Isn't ready to answer or hasn't looked into what it's all about, he tells you so. Seldom does he talk off the record, leaving it to his listeners' judgment what's to be used and what Isn't. His morning lectures In camp to his young ball players are an encyclopedia of the game and a revelation to all who attend. Everybody present learns a little more baseball.

The New Yorkers won six rvf cotan T3rra fvnm tha PVi i 1 1 crew. Big Gene Gammon, co-coach of the New Yorkers and Fred Noa starred for the locals with hard blocking and play setting ability. Little Pee Wee Raines took scoring laurels with three, which was matched by Captain Gerry Murray and Mary Gard ner. Harold Janowitz, who has been a ball of fire all week for the Panther skaters, registered three points and played a good defensive game. Gloria Brendt also racked up three for the losers.

I Willowy Gammon, the rough-' est blocker in the league, held five Panther skaters back in the final period while two of his mates were in the penalty box and two out on a jam. The Blue and White home crew picked up a deuce on Gammon's fine work. Gammon and Billy Bogash predicted that they would take over the loop lead during their home stay at the uptown drill-shed. The New Yorkers are five games in the van of, the Chicago Westerners, their nearest rival. No Derby games are on tap for.

this yeek but the Chiefs open against the Westerners next Tuesday night at the 14th St. drillshed in lower Manhattan against the fast rising Windy City crew.
