a a BOOKS OF THE DAY Book Provides Tonic for Jaded Executives "BRASS HAT OR Ph.D. EXECUTIVE." Wilfred Funk. Lester F. Miles, Inc. 269 Pages.

$2.75. By EDWARD J. WALTON President Brooklyn Junior Chamber of Commerce and Assistant Executive Brooklyn Tuberculosis and Health Association. For the first time in many a moon, here is a book that lives up to the publisher's, blurb which Dr. Miles' latest work "thinking guide for calls, management men who prefer to be progressive executives." This reviewer accepts the designation as an accurate appraisal.

Dr. Miles, the author of an earlier best seller, "It Pays to Be Lazy," for several years specialized in human engineering, while affiliated with various business organizations. His writings on business, marriage, vocational child guidance and personality have been very popular. To date he has contributed over 400 articles to some of our most popular magazines. Through arrangement with the American Management Association, his latest work.

'Brass Hat or Executive," includes self-analysis quizzes. The book is liberally sprinkled with frank opinion from men on all levels of management on the definition of a "brass hat" in contrast to the progressive executive. The author might have defined a "brass hat" as a person employed in some management capacity who could read this book in its entirety without feeling some twinge of administrative conscience. Even a hurried perusal of the work by many progressive executives might result in some "red faces" as they recognize in themselves minor tendencies towards "brass-hatism." Being a Brass Hat, according to Dr. Miles.

is not a matter of position or age but rather a matter of self-centeredness, smugness BROOKLYN EAGLE, APRIL 4, 1949 lack of vision. Through the use of clear-cut examples the author probes and brings to light countless everyday management habits that tend towards the creation of "executive dead dodos." Broad Coverage Among the specific subjects covered in detail are "Keeping Your Eye On To Greater Personal Fact-Finding and Better "The Importance of Your Personal Master Salesmanship" and "Exit the Brass Hat." In the chapter referring to selection of personnel he also includes the Miles Evaluation Inventory, a valuable guide for interviewers. The factual illustrations of principles that are included will serve as a guide to business management. Merely reading the 'book will not in itself make a top-notch progressive out of mediocre personnel, but it is a book that will serve as a tonic for jaded executives. Even where the author presents ideas that are not entirely new, the freshness of presentation of old axioms adds value and color.

At any level. of management this book may' well as a "needle" to prod the executive who has a tendency towards brass back to the simplicity of sound management. "Brass Hat or Executive" is valuable as a management check-up, and just as it is sound planning to get an annual physical examination (including a chest X-ray) it is sound planning to do an annual or semi-annual check-up on your management habits. Read it now and again in six months, and see whether or not you are leaning towards becoming a progressive executive or a brass hat. When remarks go in your ear and right out your mouth, you're asking for trouble, and you'll find it. You'll learn a lot by listening, and you'll gain a lot by letting chance bits of news stay with you and not leak out the next time a gang of you get together.

The personal and private business of your friends is your responsibility, too, if you're let in on it. If you consider yourself more than a fair weather friend, it's your duty to keep secrets and live up to your promises. Otherwise, you might as well become a modern hermit. You won't be welcome if you play a lone game. PUT YOURSELF in someone else's place.

There are things you confide to Sally and Jean, or Joe and Bill, that you want to stay in just that small circle. You wouldn't appreciate that news getting into circulation, or having one of those fellows or girls report on your doings. So it's not up to you to turn traitor. Their affairs are strictly their property, and when they honor you by asking you to share their confidences, it's up to you to deserve that faith in your integrity. It all boils down to a thing called honor.

It's not something you drag out on special occasions. It's part of you, and it's what makes up your character. And if it's strong, and really worthwhile, your best qualities as a friend and a true pal can't be hidden. Birthday Your By Stella MONDAY, APRIL 4 Born today, you have a vaunting ambition to get ahead in the world and consequently you make the best use of all opportunities offered. You have a keen mind and are careful your every step is an advance forward toward to your goal.

Rather impulsive, wher it comes to your innermost nature, you try your best to subdue it. But when you do this, it only bursts out more violently at some future time. Being independent in actions, you dislike being repressed. If you are, it only gives rise to a violent temper which you must learn to restrain if you are to influence people and get them to like you! You will be admired for your ability to get ahead -but you will need to "likeableness." You men are inclined to be methodical and exact in everything you do. To see something out of line can "throw" you.
