Jury room, it is more than likely that Frederick E. Carlton, now in Raymond street Jail on an indictment charging him with the theft of some money from a room mate, may face a much more serlouus charge.

When he was arrested there were many people who believed that his last wife, Mary Gorman Carlton, who died from tetanus on March 10 last, h.id been poisoned. But these theories were exploded completely by the report of an expert chemist, who made an analysis of the various organs of Mrs. Carlton's body and found nothing to warrant the suspicion. Since the report of Dr. C.

P. O'Connor the chemist, negativing the poison theory, there has been a good deal of speculation as to Just the amonut of evidence the Grand Jury had on the grand larceny charge and whether Mr. Clarke would be able to convict Carlton upon that Indictment. Very few of these speculators, however, have realized that the police have not quit working on another theory, quite as sensational, perhaps, as the murder theory, and that is that Carlton has been indulging In a propensity for marriage that is regarded by law-abiding persons to be quite illegal. In other words, the police have thought that it might be possible that Carlton was a sort of Dr.

Witzhoff. The result of the police Investigation, aided, as It evidently has been, by District Attorney Clarke's force, was seen this morning, although there can be nothing more than surmise as to its results. There was one man about the Court House corridor this morning who has been much interested ln the Carlton case and he thinks that It can be shown that Carlton was married as long ago as nine or ten years to a woman now living in New Jersey and that he deserted her for the first of the two wives now dead. If this is so, then the two marriages that followed the first, both wives now being dead, were bigamous and It is even believed that he was married to a fourth and a fifth wife in the meantime. One of the women present this morning was Eleanor Van Deventer, who lived with Carlton after the death of Mary Gorman Carlton.

Mr. Tillson says that stenographer Blen absented himself without leave twice, once on tbe ground that he was ill, and a second time on the allegation that his child was suffering from diphtheria. He found, according to the charge as formulated, that the Board of Health knew nothing of a diphtheria ease In the Bristol street house in which Blen lives. An Inspector was sent to investigate and he reported that the child supposed to be sick was playing around the house. But the investigation discovered, too, that Mr. Blen was busy preparing to open a typewriting, stenography and civil service school, and so reported to his superior.
