Afternoon Session, There were quite lively times at the afternoon session of the New York East Conference yesterday In the Hanson Place M. E. Church over memorials from other conferences presented by the chair man of the committee, the Rev. Dr. John H.

Wllley. Then a spirited debate arose over the report of a committee, the Kev. W. S- Wlnans, chairman, presenting it, relating to the elimination of the name of Christ and the Christmas carols from the exercises In the public schools and "the mutilation of the hymns of the church. Mr.

Wlnans said the "horns" had been taken out of the report of the committee and it had been made positive but kindly. It "deplored" the elimination of the name of Jesus Christ from the exercises and the text books and hymns and the sub stitutlon of other names for God. such as "gracious, adorable Father," by the Board of Education. Mr. Wlnans said, In view of the fact that there were 91 Methodist churches and 30,096 Sunday school scholars In Greater New York "we deplore this elimination and this violation of the state constitution and the cltv charter.

Dr. J. O. Wilson rose and said: 't think we should put back the That is too tame a resolution. The Christian sentiment of the communulty has been outraged.

Let us tell the pres idem of the Board of Education if it is not willing to represent the sentiment of this Christian community we ll get Board of Education that will. We can demand our rights without being often slve. We demand the civil and religious liberty of our people. The Christmas carols, the name of Christ and our good old hymns are dear to our hearts, and we must stand for tbem. Under no flag have our Jewish citizens bad such liberty as under our flag, and they must not be allowed to pull that and the cross of Christ down." This speech evoked loud applause.

Dr. Buckley suggested that two words, and condemn," be added to the resolu tion, "deplore and condemn." He also suggested the appointment of a com mittee of three careful and painstaking men to Investigate the matter and report to tne preachers' meeting In New York and Brooklyn, and that an Interview be had with Dr. Maxwell or somebody else to protest against the mutilation of the literature of the world to get Christ out of It. The Rev. H.

W. Byrnes suggested an amendment to add the words, "and pro test against tne elimination of the name of Christ, and that it be restored to the hymns." In this way the motion passed unanimously. Dr. C. J.

North said it should be de manded that he mutilated portions of tne nymns or the church be restored. The committee appointed is composed of F. G. Howell, George Adams and F. W.

Hannan. The memorial from tho Mg shlre Conference asking the General Conference to instruct the House of Bishops to assign themselves to groups of contiguous conferences for a period of four years was passed by a vote of 151 to 38. This Is what is called a "districted epis copacy." A memorial from the Troy Conference requesting the General Conference to restore a time limit provoked long debate. The Rev. Francis J.

McConnell of the New York Avenue Church, in speaking against it, said there was in these times, when the congregations were almost In a fluid condition in the constant removals of residence, need for flxity in pastoral terms, so that the pastor could know his congregation, the personnel of which changed every four years as a rule. The rapidity of city life demanded it. ine Kev. D. W.

Couch said thn rnnrnh should not take a backward step. ur. ueorge Adams believed the senti ment of the whole church was for a time limit. The New York and Newark eon. ferences had voted for It.

The lack of a time limit had produced more restlessness than was ever known. It was a serious' mistake not to return to a time limit. An unlimited time limit and an unlimited pastorate were an anomaly. tne Kev. m.

h. Beattva contended that the whole church should be considered. and not the individual man. Stability was neeaeu, ana no great church could ho built up with a changing pastorate. To put back the time limit would be a colossal blunder, and it would mean an exodus from the Methodist Church of laymen and ministers.

Dr. W. H. Lawrence contended for a time limit; the Revs. F.

W. Hannan. F. Howell, F. T.

Brown and others against it. and the memorial was defeated by 65 to 119. The memorial for an elective nresidlne- eldership, already explained in the Eagle, was aeieatea Dy a vote of 66 for and 110 against. The other memorial concernine nara- graph 248. relating to liquor selling, aancing, meater going, card playing, which was published In full on Monday that the General Conference be asked to provide an advisory clause instead of a mandatory clause, was not considered in that form.

A resolution presented bv Professor W. A. Rice strikine out the specific amusements, which Dr. Buckley declared supported the original rule, was passed by a vote of 164 to 22. This makes amusements a matter of the Individual conscience.

The reports of the Brooklyn Church Society and the New York Church Extension and Missionary Society were presented and the Rev. Dr. A. W. Byrt and tne Kev.

ur. Frank Mason North, the su perintendents, spoke of the work. The Kev. Dr. F.

B. Upham read the report for the Brooklyn Society and the Rev. W. W. T.

Duncan, for the New York rganization. Dr. Byrt spoke of the groat things accomplished by the debt-paying movement and hoped It would go on for- ver. ur. North said Manhattan and the Bronx offered a great missionary eld.

and a great opportunity. Both Drs. Byrt and North were recommended to Bishop Burt for reappointment. Henry Blatzj presented a resolu tion that the conference adopt the individual cup for use In communion on hy gienic grounds. The resolution was igned by half the members of the con ference and was passed.

Joseph Fettrlch. counsel for the confer- nce. was presented by the Rev. W. A.
