Puller has had a meteoric career on the turf. A year ago he possessed little or no reputation, and, while he rode with considerable success at New Orleans during the Yorkville alleys of Manhattan in the Greater New York Individual championship, came Secretary George Cormack of the New York Yacht Club received a letter on Saturday last from Sir Thomas Lipton, anent another try by the Irish baronet for America's cup. The communication was recently to Brooklyn last Saturday night with a chip 100-day meeting at the Louisiana track, it with former men of the St. Nicholas Skating Club Into the new Wanderers, has brought about a change in the hockey horizon as it has existed for the past few seasons. In this Travis is roundly assailed on the charge of laying out a golf course In the State of Pennsylvania for a railroad company. The notice of this event, it is declared, was Bent out as a carbon copy on the letter head of the railroad company, which is said to own the land, although it Is ostensibly conducted by a club. Mr. Higgins says in part: "We have to-day a title bolder whose status as an amateur has been questioned many times, and who is continually doing things, that, while perhaps technically within the limits of the law, are In decidedly bad taste.

There were 145 entries for the championship at Nassau. It 1b safe to assume that If any other of the 144 men had won It would have been a more popular victory, although no one denies the skill of Travis as a golfer. The U. S. G.

Fuller Near the Ideal Jockey. One advantage that Fuller possessed over the other star riders was the apprentice allowance of five pounds, which, while applying to selling races only, was a manifest advantage and helped to swell the number of his winning mounts materially. Next year he will not be entitled to this allowance, The amount of money that the horses which Fuller rode won for owners reaches to almost half a million dollars. The victories include a number of the most important races of the year. Possessed of a firm seat, good Judgment of pace (unfortunately this last possession only applies while he Is in the saddle) and light hands, he Is a strong hand rider, albeit toward the close of the season he learned to use the whip with force and at the same time with discretion.

Fuller comes nearer reaching the ideal of a jockey than any rider since the days of Tod Sloan. His one fault is his lax habits. As a usual thing, when a jockey dissipates It is champagne that is his favorite beverage. Fuller, however, is more plebeian In Brooklyn. Sc.l Nnme.
