Wartime Problems To Those Seeking An Allowance "When my son applied for an allowance for me and his father it was not granted because I was working and my husband's farm was paylieu-ling," writes Mrs. C.

N. W. "Since then the plant where I was sewing parachutes has slackened off and anyway I have been sick. Our farm pays off nothing and we are in a bad way. Was the ruling on our allowance final? Can we get it now? Since then our son has married.

Does the fact that his wife gets her full allowance hurt our chances?" This column is really an answer to about ten such letters on the allowance problem received during the past week. When there is a change in the status of the parental dependents, a case can be reopened and allowance started, if the facts warrant it. Indeed. a dependent can protest an adverse ruling on an allowance by submitting more facts to the disbursing office. Initiated by Him These Class and allowances have proved to be prob.lems A service man is required to send a Class allowance to his legal wife and children but any family allowance an enlisted man sends to his parents, or dependent brothers or sisters, is actually optional on his part.

He must initiate the application and be willing to take the cut in his monthly pay. Moreover he can cancel a or "B-1" allowance and the dependent has no redress except an appeal to his sense of fair play. The amendments to the original Allowance Act which became effective on Nov. 1, 1943, altered the bad situation where an allowance to to a wife reduced the allowance to the man's older folks. His marriage today makes no difference in the amount the parents receive.

He only has to add $5 more to the deduction in his pay in order to keep the checks to his parents a- When there is any question about the eligibility of a dependent the man himself can straighten it out quicker through military channels than the dependent. He can explain his case to his finance officer, who passes the facts, together his recommendations, to the "central office. This office has experts who compare the facts as submitted through military nels with the facts contained in the certificate of dependency that every Class or "B-1" dependent must sign. This document is an important one. It should be answered honestly and sent back quickly.

If, however, the dependency office finally decides that the parent or parents, because of their incomes. are not entitled to a Government Eagle Staff photo ALL SQUARE NOW -John Chieffo, war veteran, makes final payment on the three pints of blood borrowed from the Red Cross in Africa by joining the list of triple donors. 16 (U.P)- Supreme headquarters today denied reports that Gen. Sir Bernard L. Montgomery had been removed from command of all Allied ground forces in western France. It had been reported yesterday that Lt. Gen.

Omar N. Bradley of the U. S. Army had been placed on an equal footing with the British general. Supreme headquarters said the reports apparently resulted from the announcement by Supreme ComGen.

Dwight Eisenhower that Bradley commands the 12th group, of which Lt. Gen George S. Patton commands one army. The 12th Group, however, is part of the 21st Army Group, which is commanded by Montgomery and thus the British general outranks Bradley, although both are under Eisenhower. advanced lines in Tunisia when German shrapnel him.

Kemp, his arm torn by a flak fragment, was nursing his riddled Mustang fighter home after running into heavy antiaircraft fire while strafing trucks and troops on a highway, when he saw the large formation bombers at 20,000 feet.

"They were under attack by a hell of a gang of enemy aircraft." he said. "I figured that if I ran through them at double time it might cause them to break up.
