He taught at St. John's College Extension and in 1930 was transferred to Niagara Universityy, where he was first professor of education. We are anxious to be of further service to our country and we feel that we are equipped to help the Government in its need." In her hour of crisis America's youth responded with a willingness "not matched by any other nation," he had observed a few weeks earlier.

Later during the war years Father Mahoney blamed the world's condition on "the fact that man has forgotten his God, has lost contact with the eternal moral law and has repudiated the dictates of the laws of justice and charity that thread the unity and peace among a brotherhood of men under the common Fatherhood of God." Asserting on another occasion that "Catholics are not opposed to change," he added, "reforms must take place, but take place within the framework of the Unchanging, eternal movement is moral not for- law. ward but backward." Warren said after the conferences that he was "hopeful" though not optimistic over prospects for settlement. He said the past discussions had produced "significant developments." The conferees agreed to resume their talks today. Mum's the Word As U.S. Carries On Phone Talks Here An iron curtain was lowered today around local telephone negotiations as two Federal conciliators resumed efforts to bring four striking unions and the New York Telephone Company together. For three hours yesterday officials of the union met with company executives at the Gramercy Park Hotel in joint and separate sessions, but what, if anything, they accomplished was kept secret.

The session resumed with Ronald W. Haughton, special assistant to the director of the U. S. Conciliation Service, who arrived Friday night to help out conciliator J. R.

Mandelbaum, sitting in to familiarize himself with ramifications of the dispute, which has kept 35,000 workers away from their jobs for three weeks. Henry Mayer, attorney for 15 striking telephone unions, said the metropolitan walkout probably could not be settled for less than a $6 weekly wage increase. Mayer, who had just arrived from Minnesota, said Midwest strike leaders rejected the $2.50 offer of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, because they felt it was "wholly inadequate." Welcoming the delegates to the conference, Monsignor Campion, pastor of the church, declared: "The Brooklyn Baseball Club of the National League and its president, Mr.

Rickey, deserve the highest praise and support from this group because it was the first baseball club in a major league of organized baseball to include a recognized Negro player on its team, "Mr. Rickey," the monsignor continued, "will never completely know nor adequately appreciate what encouragement, hope and confidence he has given the Negro race not only in Brooklyn but throughout the United States." A resolution congratulating and commending Mr. Rickey and the Dodgers for their "manifestation of true sportmanship" was passed unanimously, The Ives-Chavez bill, pending before Congress, which would set up a Federal Fair Employment Practices Commission, was indorsed, along with a resolution calling on Representatives and Senators the bill.
