"The greater part of the whisky, brandy and beer sold in New York to-day is chemically prepared and is absolutely unfit for the human stomach," said the physician. "Never before 1 began to look into this thing did I imagine the extent to which this practice of manufacturing and bottling impure liquors has grown in recent years. The impurity of the Ice cream and soda water essences is also far more general than any one would believe.

Before this Investigation of Dr. Darlington Is ftniBhed there will be some startling revelations." One of the results of the facts brought to light so far is that all physicians are to be warned that in prescribing liquor of any sort In their practice they should make certain that the patient obtains pure liquor and not the fusel oil, creosote variety. ment, on the Casino courts, and although Naturally, there Is a big turnout from all the Jersey resorts, but it Is the big territory represented that is chiefly remarkable. O'Connor at the same time asked for permission to be made a party defendant in the action of Blatchford against the Commissioner, which is to be tried out before the Appellate Division.

Justice Dickey denied the motion, saying that, as an appeal had already been taken, he would not interfere. Another match of considerable Interest was that between former Champion William A. Lamed and the Western player. Richard Stevens. It wbb thought Larned would have little difficulty In winning.

Larned took the first set by steady, con gone, and that the best thing for Tammany Interest at the Island would be to have a man there who was not so desperately disposed, to walk a chalk line as the present police czar there. Mr. Dooley has an instinct, purely born of police service In the old city of Brooklyn, to thump a head when he sees it, or, to put it more plainly, to follow up lawbreakers with a pertinacity that is foreign to diplomacy in all countries of civilization. There may be a possibility now that Mr, Dooley may butt in where he Is not wanted, and this is a The most injurious of the chemicals used in the adulteration and preparation of the bad whiskey which abounds In New York City are fusel oil and creosote. spectors engaged in the work of investigating the adulterations It has become evident that the crusade will assume much larger proportions than was originally Intended. In the field of liquor selling the corruption of standard brands of liquor has gone so far and the market for spurious brands has become so wide that Dr. Darlington is convinced that he will require the services of a large force of detectives before he can hope to do much toward eradicating the evil. In this work the manufacturers of several standard brands of whisky have expressed a desire to co-operate. In the field of soft drinks, ice cream, flavoring, confectionery and case confections, adulteration has been found to be equally general, but less Injurious In character.
