Captain Fennelly received the Police Department Combat Cross in 1937 for participating with his men in the apprehension of a gang of fur and jewel thieves in a loft in the garment district. He and his men had been trailing this mob for days, convinced that they would catch them redhanded. Three of the men surrendered in a W. 29th loft. carrying bags that were later found to contain $35,000 worth of furs.

Two of their confederates, Jules Richman and Joseph Epstein, drew 45 caliber revolvers and attempted to it out. In the gunfight that followed Richman, and third Epstein bandit were a was wounded. When survivors were questioned they committing a series of night club gem robberies that had stumped police for two years. John's University, died early today in his home, 220 Lewis Ave. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Newman attended St. Teresa's Parochial School, St. John's Preparatory School, St.

John's College and Brooklyn Law School. While at St. John's Prep. he was captain of the basketball team which won the New York State championship in 1920. Mr.

Newman was an examliner in the Corporation Counsel's office in Queens. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, Bushwick Council, and a member of the Ushers Society and the Holy Name Society of St. John the Baptist R. C. Church.

A solemn requienr mass will be offered for Mr. Newman at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. John the Baptist R. C.

Church, Lewis and Willoughby Aves. Father Newman will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale. Also surviving are parents, John and Mary O'Donnell Newman.

To Hold Open House At 'Ranch-Type' School The Board of Education of the Plainedge School District has announced an open house at the new ranch-type school building just completed, tomorrow, from 2 to 6 p.m. The building is located at the intersection of the Hicksville-Massapequa Road and Stewart subject for tomorrow. Edward A. Sellman, 51, Former St. John's U. Official Word was received today St. John's, University of the death the Rev.

Sellman, C.M., president and assistant superior at that institution from 1935 to 1938. Father Sellman, 51, died yesterday in Greensboro, N. where he was pastor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. Born in Little Falls, N. he had a distinguished career as a preacher and administrator in the Order of the Priests of the Congregation of the Mission, who administer St.

John's. After his graduation from St. Mary's High School, Little Falls, he attended St. Joseph's College, Princeton, N. and St.

Vincent's Seminary, Germantown, Pa. In 1921 he pronounced his vows as a Vincentian priest and was ordained at St. Vin(cent's May 29, 1926. A solemn requiem mass will be offered for Father Sellman at 11 a.m. Monday at the seminary in Germantown.
