for publication the same day; Os late as 10 p.m. Saturday night for publication Sunday. CH CHANGED with the times Always a solemn religious ceremony, the funeral rites were once assumed by friends and neighbors. The facilities and the skill of the existing enterprises and craftsmen were called upon -the local carpenter, the livery stable; other people employed for the occasion were the sexton, the town crier for the announcement, wailers, mutes and others. The comparatively simple services rendered by the forerunner of the modern funeral director (who appeared between 1800 and 1850) gradually grew more and more complex.

Embalming, introduced during the Civil War, is now a professional skill of high order. This scientific accomplishment with the more recently developed restorative arts softens, if not altogether obliterates, the ravages of illness and the scars of accident. Of added social significance, embalming eliminates the spread of disease through scientific sterilization and sanitary precautions. The Community Funeral Directors, who sponsor these weekly messages, have kept pace with the changes of the times, THE FOLLOWING FUNERAL DIRECTORS A RECENT SURVEY OF THE COST OF FUNERALS ARE MEMBERS OF THE METROPOLITAN conducted locally shows that of each one DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION, INC. 133 were up to.
