Did You Know? Throughout England' upon the sepulchers of English knights and barons are to be found suits of armor, complete with gauntlets and visors. Presumably these are the battle garb of these departed heroes. Not always, however, is this the case. Good armor was expensive and difficult to procure, and often the eldest son inherited and wore the same coat-of-mail which served his father so well. In later years the situation became even more acute, as became a lost art, and "armored panoply" became more armory ceremonial than utilitarian.

A To supply the needs of those titled families who wished to preserve the ancient family burial custom of "laying the armor to rest with the master," a German firm of metal workers in Nuremberg undertook to supply strictly "mortuary" armor in cast bronze. For years this firm enjoyed a lucrative business in supplying these "iron suits" to families throughout Europe.
