Malthaner chief ambition is to carry Uncle Sam's colors in the water in the international struggle of 1952. AI has already made great progress in that direction. He is considered one of the best middle-distance freestyle strok-ers in the Intercollegiate ranks of the country. He gave evidence of that recently when he won the 440-yard freestyle event against the University of Connecticut in the latter's 20-yard pool in Storrs, in 4:52.8 for a New England Association record. The previous mark for the distance by a Springfield College man was 4:58.7 and was made by Harry Rawstrom in 1940.

The New England standard that the Brooklyn boy really eradicated was that of 4:55.5 hung up by Bob Reid of Williams against Springfield on Jan. '18 last. Swimming comes natural to the Flatbush boy, who has been at it since he was five years old. He was taught by Bill Noonan, a professional long-distance performer who has competed in the 15-mile swim in Lake Ontario. Noonan was attracted by the boy's form and enthusiasm to learn, lie schooled him in Reynolds Channel at Atlantic Beach.

Al was individual medley and 220-yard freestyle titlist at Columbia University under Coach Ed Kennedy. FLATBUSH BOYS PRODUCT Al first came into prominence as an exponent of matters aquatic at the Flat-bush Boys Club. He competed for Erasmus Hall for four years and captained the Flying Dutchmen in 1941. He improved his style as a protege of Coaches Tom Bannon and Jimmy Ryan. He anchored the Buff and Blue's medley relay triumvirate which was the runner-up for the P.

from 1941 to 1944, and since then at private camps in New York and New England. He worked as an instructor under Bert Bach-man, director of the American Red Cross Chapter Safety Service at its National Aquatic Schools. Bachman's son is co-captain of the Springfield team this season. While at Erasmus Hall, Al worked with a group of crippled youngsters and helped them gain supreme confidence In the water. He has done similar work in the Springfield ley Open golf tournament and jumped Into the No.

Furthermore, Malthaner has served as an instructor tinder Charles Silvia, his college coach, at the two-state (Massachusetts and Rhode Island) Y. M. C. A. Aquatic Institute.

Al is majoring in teacher education in order to fit him-eelf to instruct in social studies and English. However, he hopes to eventually concentrate on coaching swimming at one of the big colleges. EX-SMOKE JUMPER In 1945, Malthaner engaged in the dangerous work of a smoke Jumper for the U. S. Forest Service.

He parachuted to fight forest fires in remote sections of Montana and Idaho. That is one place, he will tell you, that his swimming was no asset, for water was as scarce as the drinking variety at the present time in New York City. During the past Christmas vacation period, Al and 17 of his teammates traveled to Fort Lauderdale, to attend the annual forum sponsored by the Swimming Coaches' Association of America. En route they stopped at Atlanta to dunk the Georgia Tech swimming team and submerge Emory University, both mentored by Springfield alumni, Fred Lanoue and Ed Smyke. The mentors were New England diving champions as undergraduates.

As the climax, the Springfield mermen stopped at Silver Springs, where they took underwater pictures for an analysis of their strokes. Malthaner has made many sensational rescues in his time, but the most spectacular one was the snatch of two girls from death in Davey Jones' locker off Long Beach, L. I.
