DECEMBER 1. 1906. LAY CORNERSTONE NEW CATHOLIC CHURCH Sishop McDonnell to Preside at Our Lady of Mercy Exercises. EDIFICE TO BE BEAUTIFUL. The Rev E.

W. McCarty Honored by His Alma -Catholic Church News. With all the pomp and ceremony worthy of the occasion the Right Rev. Bishop Charles E. McDonnell will to-morrow afternoon officiate at the laying of the cornerstone of the new Church of Our Lady of Mercy, now in the course of tion on Schermerhorn street between Bond and Nevins streets.

Assisting him will be the Rev. Richard S. Foley, rector of the church, and numerous clergy, some formerly connected with the church and others former boys of parish. The sermon of the occasion will be preached by the Very Rev. Edward William MeCarty, rector of St.

Augustine's Church, Sterling place and Sixth avenue. The ceremonies will also be attended berthe for people they of the have parish been in large expectantly num- awaiting this occasion for the past year. It was about twelve months ago that the city announced its intention to acquire all property that stood in the way of the approach to the new Manhattan Bridge a and degree of doctor of laws, and at the same time honored in a similar manner the Rev. John J. Mallon, who is attached to the Church of Our Lady of Victory, Throop avenue and McDonough street.

On Thursday morning next, the Right Rev. Bishop McConnell will admisister the sacrament of confirmation to a large class in the Church of St. John the Baptist, Lewis and Willoughby avenues. This church is under the direction of the Vincentian Fathers, The second week of the mission now in progress in the Church of Our Lady of Victory, Throop avenue and McDonough street, will begin -to-morrow and will be devoted to the men of the parish. The Rev.

John J. Woods, rector the church, and the band of Paulist Fathers conducting the mission, are highly gratified at the zeal and piety manifested last week by the women. Next Saturday, December 8, the Feast of -the Immaculate Conception will be a holy day of obligation, and will be commemorated in an especial manner in several of the Brooklyn cuhrches. There will be special services in St. James' ProCathedral, 'on Jay street, when the Right Rev.

Bishop Charles E. McDonnell will celebrate a pontifical high mass. He will also impart, after the mass, the pontifical blessing, to which a plenary indulgence is attached. Special services will also be held in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Leonard and Maujer streets. of which the Rev.

James F. Crowley is rector. Father Crowley has arranged for a special musical programme, to be delivered at the mass. In the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Broadway and Aberdeen street, of which the Very Rev. Eugene H.

Porcile, S. P. is rector, this will be a day of particular devotion, for it is in this church that the famous shrine of the Immaculate Conception, a fac-simile of the one at Lourdes, is contained. In addition to the serives in the morning, which will include a solemn high mass, Father Porcile has arranged for pilgrimages to take place in the church in the afternoon and evening. These pilgrimages, which occur regularly on the third Sunday of each month, are always well attended, I CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF MERCY.

DE the old Church of Our Lady of Mercy, established about half a century ago, was compelled to look a new location. Father Foley looked about and was fortunate in securing the present site, at a large figure, which includes seven lots on Schermerhorn street and five lots on State street. He was delayed in beginning the erection of his church owing to the buildings that occupied the site at the time of the purchase. These were razed as soon as vacated and the excavation begun. Although in construction but a short time the church is going up rapidly and will be completed long before the beginning of In style the new edifice, which will rank with most beautiful in the city when completed, will be of the Lombardic Romanesque, built of brick on three sides and with a facade of dove color Vermont marble.

It will be about 148 feet in length, with an exterior height from the sidewalk to the pediment of 65 feet and a width of 74 feet. Its style is nowhere to be found in New York, T. H. Poole the architects, having taken broad scope in their efforts to provide pleasing and uniform beauty of style. The plan of the church will be basilican, consisting of a nave 37 feet wide, with two aisles each of a width of 16 feet.

The sanctuary, which is to be 24 feet deep, is to be apsidal in form and treatment, and will contain in the wall large recessed panels formed in the masonry, which will be inlaid with decorative figure subjects worked in gold and marble mosaic. The entire interior will be a huge gem of beauty. In order to enhance the more the general beauty Mr. Poole has adopted a pale, buff colored, impervious brick of special make to form the general wall surfaces. This will form a fitting background for the general ornamental work of gray white, dull glazed terra cotta, which is to be the treatment of the arches, belt and band courses.

cornices and window jambs. At the place where transepts would be if the church were to be cruciform in plan, projecting transeptal apses will be built, containing on epistle side a special chapel and on the gospel side the baptistry. Here the ceiling of pale reddish gold Guastarius roof tiling will be domed, while throughout the rest of the edifice it will be vaulted. This decorative tiling, of varying shades, will be inlaid with a band of pale sea green unglazed and embossed tiling of special make. The ceiling ribs will be of semiglazed terra cotta.

On each side of the side aisles will be three apsidioles containing confesgionals. The interior height of the nave will be 57 feet, while the narthex, with staircases leading to the organ loft, will be unusually spacious. There will be no clerestory windows nor traceries in the aisles to prevent an unbroken figure treatment of the rich stained glass windows, the subdued light from which will enhance. the beauty of the columns, pilasters, wainscoting, steps and altar platforms of pink Tennessee and mottled green Pennsylvania marbles. The church will be absolutely fireproof and what little woodwork is used, as for doors and organ loft front, will be of Norwegian oak.

The transom grill work and upper panels of the doors will be of verdantique bronze. The lighting will be by electricity. Owing to the necessarily small groundwork allowed for the sacristies, these will be two stories in height. Father Foley is also erecting a new parish house of four stories, which will have a basement and subcellar. The building will have a frontage of 29 feet and a depth of 65 feet.

Its facade and of the returns will be of Vermont part marble, corresponding with the church. To-morrow, the first Sunday of Advent, the devotions of the forty hours will begin in St James' Pro-Cathedral on Jay Greet, of which the Rev. Peter Donohue rector. On Wednesday, the feast of St. Sabba, the devotions will begin in the chapel attached to St.

Joseph's Convent, at Brentwood, and on next Sunday, the second Sunday in Advent, the devotions will begin in the Church of St. Mary Star of the Sea, Court and Luquer streets, of which the Very Rev. Mgr. Joseph O'Connell is rector. It is not generally known that the Very Rev.

Edward W. McCarty, rector of St. Augustine's Church, Sixth avenue and Sterling place, who is to preach to-morrow at the ceremony of the laying of the cornerstone of the new Church of Our Lady of Mercy, and who preached so eloquently on Thanksgiving Day at the dedication of the new Chapel of St. John the Baptist, attached to St. John's Home, has been honored by his alma mater.

When Winer denied having any such furniture the man produced e. postal card bearing Winer's name and requesting the Salvation Army to call and take away several old pieces of furniture and other old things and distribute them among the poor. No sooner had the wagon left than a musician entered the store and began telling his prices for an eight-piece orchestra.

"You've made a mistake, I don't want any orchestra," said Winer. The musician produced another card with Winer'8 name at the foot. A little later a second hand furniture dealer appeared with still another card. He wanted to see the furniture Winer was said to be anxious to dispose of. Others who called in the RAILROADS.

An especial feature of the services here next Saturday will be the anniversary of the coronation of the statue in the shrine with a diadem of rich and precious jewels. The diocesan authorities are highly gratified at the result of the examinations held last, Tuesday and Wednesday of the junior clergy of the diocese.

The examinations were held in the diocesan seminary attached to the College of St. John the Baptist, Lewis and Willoughby avenues. Next Monday and Tuesday evenings the dramatic corps of the Young Men's Literary Union, attached to St. Patrick's Church, Kent and Willoughby avenues, will present in the Parish Hall, on Taaffe place the well-known three-act Irish drama, "Shaun Aroon." The proceeds will be devoted to the church. Next Saturday week a mass will be offered for the members of the alumnae association of the Visitation Academy in the Church of St.

Augustine, Sterling place and Sixth avenue. Work is progressing rapidly on the new Church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary which the Rev. John Vogel is erecting at Harrison and Hicks streets. Father Vogel hopes to have the edifice ready for dedication on the second Sunday of this month, when, it is expected, His Excellency, the Right Rev. Mgr.

Diomede Falconio, the apostolic delegate, will sing the pontifical high mass. The Rev. J. P. Molyneaux, C.

attached to the College of St. John the Baptist, Lewis and Willoughby avenues, who has been suffering for some time past with muscular rheumatism, is now at his home in New Orleans recuperating from the effects of his illness. The Rev. John J. Bohag, the popular associate rector of the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Fort Hamilton Parkway and East Fourth street, Windsor Terrace, underwent a successful operation for appendicitis early last week.

He is now convalescing with every hope for a rapid recovery. Father Bohag is very popular in Windsor Terrace and the news of his recovery will be cause for much joy, To-morrow week the Right Rev. Bishop McDonnell will dedicate the now completed Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Broadway and Aberdeen street, in erecting which the Very Rev. Eugene H. Porcile, S.P.M., the rector, worked indefatigabily through ten long years.

The dedication next Sunday will be an occas'on of great- joy to both Father Porcile and his parishioners. During the many years that Father Porcile has been engaged on this new edifice he has had the co-operation of his parishioners, but his parish is not the most resourceful in the diocese, and the funds necessary to construct the monument which Father Porcile intended to erect in honor of the Immaculate Conception, a shrine dedicated to whose memory is contained in the church, could not have been collected in the parish alone in three decades. Despite his many discouragements Father Porcile continued with his work, and through the assistance obtained by the presence of the shrine, which is visited by hundreds of persons each month, he was enabled to complete his work. His church to-day, in addition to being one of the largest in the diocese, is one of the most beautiful also, and is looked upon as an absolute work of art. The Very Rev.

Mgr. Mooney, of Manhattan, who preached at the laying of the corner stone ten years ago, will deliver the dedicatory sermon next Sunday morning. Concluding his services in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Right Rev. Bishop McDonnell will proceed to the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Putnam avenue, near Ralph, of which the Rev. James J.

Durick is rector, and in the afternoon will bless the new parochial school that Father Durick has erected on Madison street in the rear of his church. To-morrow, the first Sunday In Advent, Initiates another year in the history of the church. The ecclesiastical calendar begins with the season of Advent which 1s made a season of solemn preparation for the coming of Christ on Christmas Day. It has been decided to continue the organ recitals that have been going on for the past three weeks at the Sunday evening services in the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel throughout the month of December. The selections will be suitable to the season of Adveent.
