Dudley Oliver Osterheld, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in Ozone Park, who not long ago made the statement to the Eagle that he had been approached by several saloon keepers and offered money to stop the crusade against them, was shown an article in a Brooklyn newspaper, under date of September 13, in which Louis Langonhagen, president of the local branch of the Wine, Beer and Liquor Dealers' Association, brands the allegation as false.

He further states that if the saloonkeepers had even contemplated such an action he, as president of the local organization association, would have known of It. The Rev. Mr. Osterheld had this to say ln reply: "Undoubtedly, Mr. Langenhagen has not questioned all the saloonkeepers in the Eighty-third precinct.

If he had he would perhaps have found some of the men who approached me. I still Insist that it Is true that the saloonkeepers visitei me and offered me money to cease prodding the police ln regard to closing the salojns on the Sabbath. "Mr. Langenhagen, as president 6f the Liquor Dealers' Association of the Borough of Queens, says that the Eighty-third precinct is a quiet one and that the captain is doing all he can to keep good order. I will agree with him that the precinct is now rather quiet and that the captain seems to be doing all he can, but he has only been doing this as the result of my complaint.

It was not quiet before I complained." Mr. Osterheld then specified a flagant violation of the Sunday law which he and three others witnessed before his crusade was begun and added that the representative of the Brooklyn paper, who' secured the information from Mr. Langenhagen which appeared tn print last Thursday, I was himself one of the witnesses to the violation he cited. Together with the right, The German steamship Pisa arrived yesterday at the Bush Company's Independent stores from Hamburg. She brought E55 steerage passengers and a cargo of toys, crockery, hollow glassware, zinc, lead and 19,500 bags of raw beet sugar. Captain Fendt reports that from the English channel to Cape Race he encountered a succession ot strong gales from the southwest and northwest, with high seas. On September 11 these developed into a hurricane that started from the southeast and swung around to the northwest, accompanied by high, tumultuous seas.

The storm lasted twenty-four hours before it blew itself out. The continued imports of beet sugar from Hamburg indicate the uneasiness of refiners and merchants here as to the Cuban situation. The duty on beet sugar Is about .34 higher than on foreign cane sugar, and Its standard is lower. All the same the most expert chemist is unable to tell the refined product from that of the raw cane sugar. This is very encouraging to the management. The card of races for to-day was an exceptional attraction; it included the 2:29 stake pace for $500, the 2:27 trot for $300, the 2:15 pace for $300 and the 2:17 trot for $300. In addition to the harness races, in which a big field of fast horses was entered, there were some interesting features of the horse show in the morning. To-morrow's card includes the 2:21 stake trot for $500.

the 2:23 trot for $300, the 2:27 pace for $300 and the 2:35 trot or pace for $300, beside the usual morning horse show. Paula, ln the circle of death, met with a bad accident a couple of days ago and failed to appear for her exhibition here. Her manager sent out Professor Harry A. Harmon, of San Francisco, a man well known in athletic circles in Brooklyn and Manhattan, who does a high dive backward from a 75-foot ladder into a tank containing but 6 feet or less of water. The tank was put in position yesterday afternoon, right in front of the grandstand, and Mr.

Harmon was to make his dive this afternoon. Mr. Fullerton's portable house was the center of attraction yesterday afternoon, and both he and Mrs. Fullerton were working like beavers to do all they possibly could to make the fair of interest to tho patrons. They were ever ready to explain all about their experimental work at Wading River during the past summer in making good vegetables and fruit grow in poor soil, and they both showed that they were adepts in agricultural and horticultural pursuits, as well as in writing, lecturing and picture taking.

The photographs in the house, showing the work us it progressed at the station, are full of history in themselves. These pictures were taken by Mr. and Mrs. Fullertou, and show that both are excellent photographers; in fact, one collection of views took first premium in the photography class. The three views of the prospective new depot for Riverhead station attracted great attention in the house, and there were lots of people admiring and voting for their choices all day.

The plans were drawn by Lord Hewlett, Cramm, Goodhue Ferguson and Luther Birdsall. For quite a time the plans drawn by Lord Hewlett were the favorites ln the voting. Dr. Parry and his lasso are again on hand to keep order on the track. The fair wouldn't be complete without this adjunct.
