But such was the genius TO LET. small stnre and 3 rooms: neighborhood: ooposlte nark: 12ft St. Eiward as a strict disciplinarian, and who will tolerate no laxity on the part of either his officers or men. During the summer months the reservation 1 3 well guarded by an entire company of men, consisting of about 106 ex-perieneel solders. Under their watchful eyes the remainder of the enlisted men may peacefully sleep with the knowledge that no foreign or local element will disturb their slumbers.

Despite the large force of men In reserve, two military convicts, who were serving terms for some offense or, other nnd who were to be dishonorably discharged upon the expiration of their terms, managed to escape last Tuesday morning from the prison hospital, where they were lodged. The names of the fugitives are not known, however. Though it is the custom of the officers to usually notify the. police when a prisoner escapes, it was not done in this particular case. Inquiry upon the part of the reporter at the Fort Hamilton police station brought to light the fact that the authorities at the reservation had not Informed the police of the loss of the two prisoners.

Several of the soldiers verified the story, but none of them knew the names of the two men, and all the information they were able to give was that (he men were sent to the fort from some other post. According to the stories of the soldiers, the prisoners managed to escape by forcing their way out of the upper story window of the military hospital and sliding down the rainpipe. Their absence was not discovered until the following morning, when an attendant went in to clean up the room. Two new buildings are now in the course of construction at the fort. A double barracks Is being erected, and when completed will accommodate 218 men.

It was started some time last February and is expected to be finished about the middle of October. The other building Is a new guardhouse, which is under construction at the Ninety-ninth Btreet entrance. It is about twice the size ot the old one, and will have Bleeping accommodations for three sentries. At the present time the sentries who take turn watching the gate In the night time sleep under an open tent. At the present time there are threa companies staying at the reservation.

They are Companies 3. 98 and 122, and number in all about 300 men. Each, third night one company does patrol duty. Religion seems to have established Itself quite firmly among the soldiers. Many of them go to church every Sunday, and some of them even go twice a day.

Foremost pantomime actors take the leading roles, and the productions are such sumptuous models that as much as $200,000 is spent on a single representation.

France and Italy have pretty- well clung to the pantomime, but In the United States It never until lately had much of a following. Italy and France usually had their pantomime as an adjunct to grand opera, and It Is grand opera that In this country has had the effect of turning popular attention to the form of stage art In which the voice Is never heard. Theatrical managers say that the demand for pantomime came on them suddenly and found them almost unprepared. The little Danish woman, Genee, took the country by storm; Oscar Hammerstoln found his opera house crowded every time Odette Valery was billed. Then came the public mania over Dazie, and the hysteria mounted to the point where managers dropped all thoughts of anything else and started in a rush for pantomime, that Two-Family Houses.

The party consisted of Walter Cooper, Captain H.

Tho tenth lion was killed through its desire to capture a nativo carrier who, realizing that things were becoming too warm for him, had bolted. The following Is the account of the misfortune which befell the lion through his attempt to stay the haste of the native: Tha lioness, attracted by the sight of tho fleeing man, swerved off suddenly and made after the fugitive. The man had not more than twenty yards start, and tho great brute rapidly overtook him.

Miss II fired again, and we men both fired as well, but we were not near enough to make a good running shot. The wretched man. with a courage born of desperation, turned at the last moment and hit at the lioness with his rifle. Tho blow fell a bit short, and the enraged brute, snapping at what came nearest, caught the' weapon in her mouth at the muzle. The pace at.
