40x10-1, Lawli to Waldraa, juoit It Was He Who Owned Jamaica Alligator. Vice President of Nameoke Club Brought Five of 'Em From Florida. The mystery of the alligator which attacked Richard Nott on the. outskirts of Jamaica has now been solved, and Farmer Peter Horr of Lott'B lane, Jamaica, before whose house the reptile appeared, whose chicken the alligator ate alive, and whose ducks and pigs It frightened, has been apprised as to who brought the dreadful creature from the sunny South. The man responsible for this awful piece of business, it was found yesterday, was not an enemy of Farmer Horr, but no le3s a personage than Herbert A.

O'Brien, vice president of the Jamaica Citizens Association and of the Nameoke Democratic Club and member of the local school board. It seems that a few months ago, when Mr. O'Brien returned from a trip to Florida, he brought with him five young alligators to decorate his spacious lawns and parlor rugs at Brlarwood. At first they proved a source of no end of amusement and gave the real estate man opportunity to satisfy hlB zoological curiosity on many points, and material for no end of nature Btories. The animals, under his able direction, were being trained in most remarkable ways, and were proving to be the best of household pets, when one morning Mr.

O'Brien found two of them nestled in the bottom of the bain tub when he was about to take a plunge. The playful snap at his big toe was too much for the lover of the order of the Crocodilia, and be straightway resolved that there were better places for such brutes than his private residence. The next day found him scouring the country to find out who would enjoy their company. The Otillle Orphan Asylum, thotmht he. was iust the ace.

Superin tendent George Albert Godduhn of the asylum at first demurred, but was in duced by his little charges to tone tne alligators. They were brought to the Institution by ten boys from the asylum, placed In a pond nearby, and proved Interesting creatures. But about two months ago the largest and most grouchy of them disappeared, no one knew where. "It was thot alligator," declared Superintendent Godduhn, yesterday, "which was found on the road. it was the largest and most troublesome of the five, and we are glad to have gotten rid of it." The pond is about two' ml es from the asylum.

The only question now unsolved Is in Just what manner the creature managed to go the two miles and arrive safely in the Pette pond. But Farmer Horr Is much relieved tn that he has found that he possessed no enemies who would play a trick like that on him. "I know," he exclaimed, "that if this matter was put in your paper, tho mystery would be solved." FOR THE POOR BABIES. Appeal Made for Funds to Carry On Pure Milk Work. The New York Milk Committee, of which Stephen G.

Williams is chairman, has sent out an appeal for funds In carrying on the work of looking after the babies of the poor and providing them with pure milk. In order to successfully carry on this work the sum of must be raised by voluntary contribu tions. The committee's appeal for the support of milk depots is based not only upon the relief dispensed through it, but upon the assumption that many babies lives are saved by protecting the mother and encouraging her to feed her child naturallv. For the fiscal year, beginning October 1, 1909, the committee will have to maintain nine infants milk depots that feed 1,200 babies. On August 15, the depots were caring for 850 babiesl and the total number of depot babies Is now about 1,200.

Free milk for each baby who receives aid. costs about 13'4 cents dally, or $48 annually. Free instruction for each mother by nurses and physicians costs about 4 cents daily. Durine the nast year 1.773 babies re ceived pure milk at the depots, and 1,207 babies were recrularly under the super vision of physicians and nurses, i.bout 55 per cent, of the babies were rated as "fair," "poor," "bad" or "moribund" when brought to tho depots, and yet the averacn gain in physical vitality of the depot babies was 24.6 per and the number In good condition grew during the year from 45 to 87 per cent. Vertical transportation' In New York City has reached enormous proportions, and the' casual observer can hardly realize that there are, approximately, twice as many people carried vertically as are) carried horizontally every twenty-four hours. This fact, however, is shown by the following Interesting statistics. sayB the Real Estate Record and Builders We learn through the Otis Elevator Company that the records of the Building Department show that there are at present In the Borough of Manhattan alone approximately 9,000 passenger elevators, of which about 1,000 are located in private residences.

In addition to these there are approximately 12,000 freight or service elevators which are used for carrying people or merchandise; thus making a total of 21,000. Four thousand of these elevators were installed in tho last six years. Taking twenty-six of our large offlc buildings In the lower part of the Borough of Manhattan, all of eighteen floors and over, we find a total of 672 floors in all, aggregating a height of approximately one and one-third miles, with a rentable area of over 5,000.000 square feet or approximately 116 acres. In these twenty-six buildings there are 116 express elevators traveling an aggregate distance of 275 miles per hour and aver-agfng 243,000 passengers per day of eistht hours. These same twenty-six buildings have 115 local elevators running approximately the same number of car miles per hour, but carrying about 372,000 persons per day of eight hours.

This makes a total ot 231 elevators 4,400 miles, carrying a total of 616,009 passengers per day. ACREAGE OF LONG ISLAND. Some interesting figures in regard to the available acreage of Long Island for different purposes were given by President Ralph Peters of the Long Island Railroad Company, in his address before the Queens Borough Real Estate Exchange, at Long Beach last week.
