N'E of ths most difficult problems presented to the mansg-ing-edltor of a daily newspaper is to know when his hundreds of thousands of reader aro satiated with a "story" that has been "running" for several days.

I was think-ing of this problem this morning and wondering what space the cleverest ol the editors would bring the "Coronation" function down to to-morrow. Aside from the list of the dead and wounded, It will be as dull a tale to-day as would be a ruhash of the crowning of Wllllaiu -the Norman. This same proposition often present Itself to an editor in the case of a great ase or a great prize fight. lfA is meeting be- es was worth (and It was), could be put disaster, or, most of all, a prize fight. For more than thirty years, 1 hava made a study of public internal in great functions, it is most unusual for any great single event to maintain lis hold upon the readers of newspapers more than twenty-four hours. Reference Is not had to wars or tho progress of events in Congress, upon which hang the destinies of nations. is tha oue thing that keeps a good news event alive. Very few American newspaper readers to-day will know lie route followed by tho King and Queen in thalr tortuous course from Buckingham Palace through tho London streets and back again to the point of starting. Of late, the Idea has gained ground that American Presidents must travel about the country and show themselves to the people.

Unless a Chief Executive is a candidate for re-election, I see no useful purpose therein lie exposes himself tn danger, needlessly. Not to mention railroad accidents, there are a certain number of "cranks" abroad. Presidents tilways have means of exploiting their views to Congress. What Use Is there in evolving theories about at Farmers' Conventions, before people who do not understand half that is said, and It they approve, sum up their appreciation. In the words: "By heck! it was a powerful address!" Canadian reciprocity Is to he sacrificed on the altar of tariff discussion that may last until the middle of September.

How much better It would have been to have had the Canadian business settled and the tariff taken up Id December. The ap-pearance yesterday of little Miss H-year-old girl, playing one of Mozart's sonatas to the satisfaction of experts is Intensely edifying, tt. is a r-markuble feat if, as it is claimed, she accomplished this without personal Instruction. It was one of those wonderful musical shows In which color runs riot to such a degree that the eye becomes tired and sighs for the sober gray of Plymouth Town. No better and no worse than one hundred or more summer shows that have bloomed and died away, "The Red Rose" is destined to entertain the tired business man in those sad days of "my wife has gone to the country fame.

The robes, costumes and scenery were said -to have teen designed by Miss Suratt. Undoubtedly the statement is true, tot a chorus of wonderfully pretty girls wore costumes that even outdid In daring Miss Suratt's own gowns. The stnee pictures were a blaze of glory over which continually fell the soft petals of red, red roses. It was a wild, Intoxicating dream of wonderful reds aud purples. Harry B.

and Robert B. Smith were responsible for the book. Outside of giving Suratt an opportunity of displaying her slender talents to the best advantage, they did little to" help along the entertainment. The music by Robert Hood Bowers was decidedly better than the book. It was of.

Vf 1 I should lay all possible stress upon tbo illfiiciilties for transporting freight, and piissengors. A few ygars ago the army worm, so called, was made an excuse by Jay Gould to "bear" Missouri Pacific stocks about twenty points A lot of his friends were induced to sell heavily on tho strength of the report, and as there wasn't, an army worm within a thousand unlet of the railroad, he made the sellers settle on his ow terms: Caterpillars havo also served a useful purpose in the stock market, especially on roads with heavy grades. When there are so many other places that locusts, army worms and caterpillars might crawl Instead of on the rails of a transcontinental highway. It seems rather odd that they should prefer this sort of Juggernaut death to a peaceful evolution, through the cocoon stage, Into a prettier and brighter life. Many a commuter husband who lives In the country will blame his late arrival to dinner in Xew Jersey and Pennsylvania on the pests.

One excuse is as good as another. Throughout all the excitement in London town, the chimes of Bow Bells are welcoming "Whittlngion, Lord Mayor of London Town" not to mention the cat-as usual. Chicago editors appear to know about the "jackpot" fund raised for tho election of Senator Lorimer than anybody else. Editor Hinman yesterday expressed the belief that a fund of the "yellow dog" character had existed for many years, but Ire denied that he had ever contributed thereto. He went far as to say that he did not believe a meeting of the Illinois State Legislature at Springfield had been held without such a boodle fund in the last, twelve years.

He denied, however, that the money was drawn on to elect Lorimer. hut thought the moneyed Interests In Chicago were against the candidate. THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING. On Monday evening last Mr. and Mrs.
