Shelter Island, N. June 24 The official opening of Shelter Island occurred to-day, when the big Prospect House opened its doors. Of course, a number of people, particularly cottagers, have been here two or three weeks, yet the island Is never considered officially ready for the summer business until the favorite Prospect is ready to receive guests. The indications now are that the Island will have the biggest season in many years past, and one of the straws that Indicates this is the vast number of cottages rented at the Heights and vicinity. Lying around In a compact location are the beautiful cottage estates, nearly all of them rented and open thia week.

Sixty-four families were en-Joying the Invigorating breezes that make this spot one of the most favored on the coast of Long Island. A few cottagers are yet to arrive. One of the handsome new craft that flies the Phelter Island Yacht Club pennant Is the gasoline yacht Beldame, owned by S. K. Fuller.

She is now in commission. The Kuwana, a fast sloop, Is also in commission and has registered at the yacht ctub. She is owned by O. E. Loheke of East Orange.

The Prospect House baths are now open and many ara enjoying their unusually excellent features. "Phelter Island Heights is prettier than ever," said one enthusiastic lover of nature to an Eagle man yesterday.

"It seems like an exaggerated statement to make, for the island has always been one of the prettiest spots on earth, but somehow to me it seems as If our drives, our walks, the bay and the very way the lawns at the cottages are maintained this year have enhanced its beauty a hundred fold." A jolly party was held at the Cheqult Inn Thursday. The guests played various games and had a royal good time In general. The next day a large number of the guests were entertained on an old-fashioned picnic by tne proprietress, Mrs. Belle G. Crook.

Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Sylvester of Montclatr left the Cheqult Inn a few flays ago after spending their honeymoon there.

They came here directly after their marriage last week. Of course, the other guests made it pleasant for them, and the bride and bridegroom were so agreeable that there are many here who would like to see them return for a longer acquaintance. Flehing is already good and is being en-Joyed by many of the guests. Otto Ptahl. one of the cottagers, took a party from the Oxford House out in his launch, Pyanbell, a few days ago, and the catch was eighteen large weakftsh and ten seabass.
