Brady. WUUamr. McGarrlty, Alice sor as Secretary of Labor and Boston, July 22 (U.P Funerall services were held today- for Maurice J. Tobin, 52-year-old "boy wonder" of politics who died Sunday. Former President Harry S.

Truman, in-whose cabinet' Mr. Tobin served as Secretary of Labor, beaded the honorary pallbearers who escorted the body into Holy Cross Cathedral for the solemn requiem high mass sung by Archbishop Richard J. Gushing. An estimated 3,000 persons attended the mass and 5,000 knelt in the streets outside. Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York was among clergy men seated in the sanctuary of the cathedral.

The honorary pallbearers also included Martin P. Durkin, Tobin's succes- representative of President Eisenhower at tne funeral. Other city, State and national figures Joined the funeral cor tege that moved from the Tobin home to the cathedral and then to Holywood Cemetery in near by Brookime. The Massachusetts National Guard furnished a color guard and firing squad for the Irish Immigrant's son who rose to become Mayor of Boston and Governor of the state. Air Na tional Guard planes roared over the cemetery in a final salute, Mourners included many delegations from.

The salesman, Jack Geller, 45, of 2901 Avenue who had been missing from his home since Monday night, telephoned his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.

Syd Shapiro, of 45-59 Utopia Parkway, Flushing, at 11 a.m. yesterday to tell them he was going to throw himself under a subway train. Mr. Shapiro, who answered the phone, signaled his wife to take over while he ran to a neighborhood store to phone the police. Mrs.

C. Churchjat St. Peter's High School, Jer-F VICTIm OT nedl Jersey City, former assistant rector at Brooklyn Preparatory School, died yesterday in Holy Name Hospital, Teaneck, N. J. He was 77.

Born in this city, Father Cassidy was ordained by Cardinal Gibbons in 1909 and then taught at Fordham University. Later he served as assistant Lucy Luxton, for many years a bookkeeper with Bristol-Streeter, Manhattan stationers, died in Brooklyn Hospital yesterday. Miss Luxton was 60 years old and resided in the Hotel Tow ers. She retired In 1951 because of failing health. A lifelong Brooklyn resident, Miss Luxton was graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and the Heffley Institute.

Surviving are two sisters. Mrs. Joseph M. Cogan and Mrs. George A.

Cole of Holtsvllle L. and a brother, William Luxton of Brooklyn. A solemn requiem mass will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the Church of the As sumption, Hicks and Cranberry Sts. Interment will be private.

Dr. Vaughn Hartman, Me dina County's Health Commis sioner, who came out of re-tiremen recently to take the job, pioneered in this area in 1936 and 1937 witn mass immunization against diphtheria and smallpox, His latest idea came to him, he says, after studying statistics on the number of draftees who turned up with diabetes. He said the rate was three to four times what doctors had anticipated. Meanwhile, Mr. Shapiro turned over all the information to Patrolman Peter Pawlyk of the Communications Bureau, who in turn asked the telephone company to trace the call. A few minutes later he learned that the call was being made from a phone booth at the 137th St. station of the 1RT-Broadway Line. Pawlyk sent out an emergency call to Sgt.

John Wish-ton and Patrolman George Tobin of the W. 152d St. precinct, to proceed immediately to the subway station. The police arrived at noon, to find Mr. Geller still talking to his sister.

While the patrolman held Mr. Geller, Sergeant Wighton took the phone. For a number of years prior to the Dreamland Park fire in 1911 he was organist for the popular Coney Island spectacle known as "Creation." As a teacher of music he had classes in violin and mandolin. Mr. Bahr and his wife, Flor ence, observed their golden wedding anniversary June 12, 1946.

Aide Locust Valley, July 22 Funeral services for Theodore S. Van Namen, a former employe of the U. S. State Department, will be held at noon tomorrow In John's of Lattlngtown Episcopal Church. Burial will be private.

Mr. Van Namen, who died Monday In his home on Locust Place, retired in 1947 after 10 years of service in the Overseas Foreign Liquidation Corporation. He was a veteran of World War I. Surviving are his wife, the former Alice Latting, a member of the family for which Lattlngtown was named, and a son, Richard Latting Van Namen. Walkout of 500 At Tile Company Goes to Mediation The strike of some 500 production and maintenance workers at Kentile, asphalt tile manufacturers, 58 2d has gone to Federal mediation, it was learned today.

The workers, members of Local 180, United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum and Rubber Workers, walked out July 3. Their con tract expired June 30. They are seeking a 30-cent-an-hour pay increase and fringe benefits. Plants of the company in South Plainfield, N. and Chicago are not affected, it was said.

He in terrupted the playing, indicating he wanted to rest, and walked off the stage and collapsed.

Doctors at Knickerbocker Hospital said the 50-year-old musician apparently was the victim of over-exertion in yesterday's extreme heat and humidity. The concert of Spanish music, along with a performance by the Jose Greco Dance Troupe, went off as scheduled last night. Family Roslyn Heights July 22 Helen M. Hennessy, former su pervisor of the French Depart ment of Ursuline Academy, the Bronx, died yesterday in her home, 198 Warner Ave. She was a member of a family that set tled here more than 100 years ago. Miss Hennessy, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.

John S. Hennessy, was a graduate of Miss Lake's School and Bar nard College. During World War II she served as Nassau director of the American Jun ior Red Cross. Surviving are a sister, Marie Louis Hennessey of Roslyn, and a brother, William J. Hennessy of Mineola.
