21 (U.P)-Five dangerous criminals who escaped from Southern Michigan Pentitentiary and then ran roadblock in a stolen car with two kidnaped women as hostages disappeared in this vast city today and police said they may be hiding out in underworld haunts. Armed police patrolled city in a search for the desperadoes, described as "perfect gentlemen" by the women they released unharmed after a wild night long ride through Michigan. The women, none the worse for their experience, reported the men said they would be harmed only if untrue stories were told about them, "They were perfect gentlemen every 'minute of the way," said Mrs. Mary Lou Watts, 28. "They seemed so concerned about our welfare.

"And when they turned us loose, they all said 'Goodbye' to us, just as polite as can be." Police said the escapees may be getting help from the underworld. The five were the last' of 13 convicts who broke out of the huge prison at Jackson, 60 miles west of here, Saturday night. The fugitives started their flight by using a blowtorch to cut through a steel grating covering the entrance to a sewer tunnel. Boro Grand Jury Asks Dock Parley Continued from Page 1 workers on television and radio tonight. His talk will be carried by WOR-TV at 7:15 p.m.

and rebroadcast over WABC-radio at 10:15. A. F. L. officials emphasized that a defeat in the election, which will be held in Brooklyn Wednesday at Prospect Hall, 263 Prospect would not spell the end of the FederaItion's drive to wrest jurisdiction of the docks from the I.

L. A. One of the first acts of the A. F. L.

after Meany assumed the presidency was to reverse its traditional position of not disturbing the autonomy of member unions, even if, as in the case of the I. L. they were ridden with corruption. The union leader apparently believes that the waterfront fight is a challenge to the new order. In another waterfront development, former Assistant U.

S. Attorney Jeremiah J. Sullivan took over as head of the Security Bureau, an organization set up in 1946 by shipping groups to combat thefts on the piers. Sullivan, who was chief of the criminal division in the Federal prosecutor's office, succeeds John C. Hilly, now a Bush Terminal executive.

He is 36 and lives in Ridgewood, Queens. In announcing Sullivan's appointment, Robert C. Lee, vice chairman of the board of Moore-McCormack Lines and head of the bureau's executive emphasized that the bureau was still needed, despite the establishment of the bi-State waterfront commission. Bookies Girding For Comeback Continued from Page 1 a new Assistant Chief Inspector to head the Police Commissioner's Confidential Squad -the outfit that rides herd on activities of other cops andon gambling. a Chief Inspector and posThere, will also have to be sibly a new Chief of Detectives and maybe new heads of other commands.

There will be a period, probably of months, according to the gamblers' reckoning, before the new police bosses establish tight control over their men and over gambling. Even if it doesn't last, they figure, it will obtain long enough for them to make a financial killing. To gamblers who have starved for years, that looks good enough to take a chance on. There is at least one big hitch in the gamblers' plans in Brooklyn. That is the fact that the old racket grand jury and the racket investigation division of the Brooklyn District Attorney's office are still in existence.

They are currently giving their attention to crime. But the same persons who are planning on a comeback for gambling also fear that the Brooklyn racket probers may prove their first obstacle. M. J. SMITH SONS-1 Funeral Directors Est.
