Miss Furman was brought to Washington in 1929 by Byron Price, head of the Washington Bureau of the Associated Press. Because she liked people and had a flair for seeing them and getting them down on paper as individuals, her assignment was cover the White House. most impressive characteristic of "Washington By-Line" is the author's objectivity.

She writes of great people and those who thought they were great with-, out exaggeration, or ironic undertones, without hero worship or personal bias. She is always the reporter, the observer. Her reporting is accurate and at the same time alive with warmth and vitality that come from a wholesome regard for one's fellowmen. Her sense of humor enables her to keep these people she sees and reports on in focus. We Do Forget So much that happens and seems of vital importance a the moment slides out of our memory as new events crowd in.

We think we can never forget but we do. Bess Furman's book brings back to our consciousness these events of the past and makes us see them in terms of people. During the Hoover regime Miss Furman's chief problem was to get close enough to the White House to cover her assignment adequately. She was even forced to resort to unusual approaches such as the she donned a Girl Scout uniform and joined the 40 genuine Girl Scouts to participate in the traditional Christmas Carol song fest for Mrs. Hoover.

When the Roosevelts moved in the White House, Miss Furman's activities increased. And, she was forced to buy lowheeled shoes to keep up with Mrs. Roosevelt whom she knew not only as a reporter but also as a friend. One of the high lights of the book is the portrait of Mrs. Roosevelt shows her tremendous energy, her wide scope of interests, her relations with people -family, friends, newspaperwomen, political co-workers and casual acquaintances.

Bess Furman has never been mesmerized by Washington. Try the "SALTY SAVE MONEY! Buy LES the Big Improved STERLING Square Package Economy SALT lodized or Plain International Salt Co. 3 pencils- P. O. Scranton, Box Pa.

Those are extravagant words but Bess Furman deserves them, for that is what she does televises people in words.
