18 BROOKLYN EAGLE, FEB. 25, 1949 BOOKS OF THE DAY Engrossing First Novel BACKLASH. br James Raisin. Simon Shuster. 82.15.

By GEORGES CAROUSSO Short Story Writer The action of this story takes place against the background of a traveling carnival in England. Having been written by all Englishman for a British audience. its first few pages are almost a shock to the American reader. The scent of hotdogs missing there is pink lemonade roasted peanuts. and The barkers go through their spiel with an English accent.

But the crowds are the same, surging, excited. their emotions close to the surface, the tinsel, camouflage over their prosaic or sordid lives drawn thin and transparent. "Backlash" is a story of people. It is primarily the story, of Mag Maguire, the carnival boxer, and Racer, the man who daily" sends his motorcycle. roaring along the "Wall of Death." Maguire is a simple person.

a nice. easygoing lad, none too bright, nor too dumb. with a fair sense humor and a strong sense of loyalty. His ich is to box each night any young hopeful in the audience who steps into the ring with hime. More Complex Man Racer is a much more complex man.

He is bitter and sar. conic, and his affinity toward, machines has made him almost like a machine himself-ruthless and resistless in his surge toward his goals. Racing a motorcycle was an urge in him bordering upon obsession. A track accident had kept him from the racing tracks for two vears. The last of convalescence he spent whist the carnival.

riding his roaring machine across the vertical banks of the "Wall of Death." Now he is ready to race again, but he needs 50 pounds for a new machine. The main story of "Backlash" is the struggle to secure the 50 pounds. Against this seemingly thin plot. James Raisin builds up his characters and his situations and achieves remarkable suspense and a haunting sense of impending doom. Maguire in his simple, honest way is swept into the vortex of Racer's desire and hesitates at nothing to help his friend.

nival characters. The story pyramids toward its inevitable end in mounting suspense. Lacks 'Rhythm' And strangely, as if driven by an obsession as powerful as Racer's, the author does everything in his power to destroy what may have been a gripping first novel! With complete disregard of prose rhythm, and with no consideration for his; reader, Mr. Raisin unbalances his prose by using short, Hemmingway-like dialogue, and then connects it with endless, unpunctuated often 25 lines long. sentences, who has been carried along at the breathless rate of the dialogue, now is forced to slow down, punctuate the sentences himself to get their meaning, and usually ends up by skipping them completely.

In spite its mechanical failings, "Backlash" is a gripping novel of well-portrayed characters. It is sincerely hoped Mr. Raisin in his future works stops trying so hard to perfect an artificial style and sticks to his natural gift of portraying ordinary people dramatically. Or that Mr. Raisin a good proofreader.
