FUNERAL DIRECTORS CLINTON AVENUE CHAPEL 519 Clinton Brooklyn MAin 2-0531 JAN. 7, 1954 15 Anna Kross Attends Rites For an Officer In an unprecedented move today, Anna M. Kross, new Commissioner of Corrections, attended the Ridge funeral of a member Bay, ther department with an honor guard as a gesture toward boosting the flagging morale of the correcaltions force. Addressing the members of the Corrections Department who were present, the commissioner said she had attended the funeral personally because she felt was -necessary to cancel out the effect of "certain things" done by her predecessor. The "certain things," it was privately explained, was the recall of the badges of corrections officers by former Commissioner Albert Williams, who thought the badges were being used to secure free subway rides and other privileges.

As the result of this declaratien no confidence, the morale of the department, missioner Kross stated today, had sunk "obviously very low." This became apparent in connection with another funeral two weeks ago. Canceled Honor Guard The family of a Brooklyn corrections officer who died at that time at first requested an honor guard the coffin but later canceled request, defor, claring that a guard without badges was not really a guard of honor. It was this incident in particular, the Commissioner said, which made her decide to attend the funeral today of Edward A. Hintze, 59, of 431 69th a corrections officer for the past 24 years. "I felt as all of you did," she told the assembled corrections men today, "when I heard of we should join the passing of a colleague.
