To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle For some time past It has been impossible to illuminate my house so as to be able to read, and the supply has been Inadequate to use heaters for different purposes simultaneously, so that -we are obliged to use lamps for relief. We have bought new burners, hoping thereby to increase our comfort, but without the required effect. The cause of this imposition upon the public, no doubt. Is owing to legislative favors, which the gas company enjoys and makes the suffering public, up to the present, helpless.

Having made Inquiry in different directions, I find this complaint general, and the opinion prevails that the gas corporation Is Interested ln the electric company and desires to make the public suffer long enough to force It to use electric light. T. To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle: How glorious It is that Democrats ln Brooklyn have at last awakened to the necessity for providing a truly human government for their homes; that they have come to know that that which makes man human is the possession of mental, moral and social attributes and that a government which has not the fostering and developing of these attributes for its purpose Is no better for man than for dogs and pigs. Being aroused to a clear perception of the purpose of government, they have taken wise measures to secure for themselves, their families and their posterity all the benefits that can be obtained from a true and judicious exercise of governmental functions in Brooklyn. In the person of Patrick H. MoCarren they filed in said oo'jrt by Christian Thomns Thlemsen, In snld district, duly declared a bankrupt under tnt, act of Conuress relatlnit to bnnkruptcv np-provea July I.

MO RLE. Clerk have a leader whose name should stimulate IN BANKRUPTCYTV THir nraTDTcm TTri success: Tne Republicans, I am sure, have no hope of electing their candidates. I venture to state, that there is no sensible Republican who will be found voting for Mr. Ivlns, who was resurrected at the last moment. His political career cannot be classed as representing either Republicanism or Democracy.

Straight Republicans will refuse to support a man whose politloal Ideas are so conspicuously unsettled, and they will satisfy themselves by voting for Democrats, ln order to rebuke their so-called leaders. Observant Republicans cannot fail to notice the nicely planned trick of Mr. Odell to induce Mr. Hughes to relinquish his valuable work in the insurance lnvestigatiou. Mr.

Hughes exposed the unpardonable act of the national campaign committee in accepting an enormous campaign contribution out of the widows and orphans fund. Another large amount went to Albany while Mr. Odell was chairman of the state committee. Who got all that? It was certainly a master stroke of Mr. Odell's to get Mr.

Hughes out of the way by tendering him the nomination for the mayoralty of New York. Thanks to Mr. Hughes' sense of honesty he refused to be snared. Odell failed in this, but the conspiracy long ago planned between W. R.

Hearst and himself still existed, and as a last resort this plan Is to be oarrled out. Will decent Republicans help Odell to make good his contraot with Hearst? Will honest men connected with labor unions help Hearst to defeat the Democratic party ln order that Odell's schemes may be successful? Bird 8. Color has Joined hands with Hearst and Odell in an effort to defeat Democratic candidates. Democrats of this borough were loyal to Color on two occasions. Afterward he was willing to sell Brooklyn's political Independence.

For a short time he was recognized by the Manhattan organization. The leaders over there tired of him and threw him down. Now he seeks revenge. Will you, honest working men, help Color, who was never known to be a friend of yours? Don't be misled. The Democratic party is your true friend.

Vote accordingly. W. H. DOWNES. 35 Joralemon Btreet, October 15, 1905.

1hA turi h'amt HI vor limnJ. In schools ln Brooklyn. We have two pianos in our school, both of which are very old and in poor condition. The teachers wish to encourage the use of music in school entertainments, but how can it be expected that students will want to play before an audience on a piano that makes even the best of playing sound badly? The pianos which I have seen used in the public schools are of the old "square" style, a kind that is being done away with by all musicians, and although most of them are of good make, they are so old that they are "tin-panny." It is provoking to try to get at-y music out of them, for they have no carrying or singing quality. When they are used as an accompaniment for singing they are worse iban at any other time, for they are never ln tune (I have been ln the school I am attending for three years and have never yet found tho pianos properly tuned), and unless the pupils sing out of tune there is a diBcord.

The Board of Education seems desirous of having pupilB learn music, and why do they give us such poor pianos? They seem to be able to supply us with good books and teachers: then why not with good instruments on and with whtch to learn music? Brooklyn, October 13, 1905. M. B. Because their position and salary depend on what they say. Do poor men attend the churches? Very few of them, because they know that a majority of clergymen never speak a word for them, but always against them. Are a majority of rich men dishonest in business? They muBt be, because It would be Impossible for them to make so many millions ln such a short time if they were honest.

Are all the trusts, Insurance companies, railroad corporations and other great enterprises doing business in a dishonost manner? Yes, because they know that there Is one law for the rich and another the poor. In fact, the law Is afraid of the trusts and corporations. They are the bosses and rulers of this country. ETC. To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle: I have read the letter of F. Lanzer, published in Saturday's Eagle, regarding the encounter between the late Joseph Fuchs and Gottfried Westernacher, now the Democratic candidate for sheriff. While I am In no way Interested In Mr. Weaternacher's canvass, I feel It my duty, as an eyewitness of the affair, to tell the facts In the case, in plain justice to all concerned.

The trouble happened In April, 18114, and Mr. Fuchs died iu December of that year. Westernacher and Fuchs had had an argu ment earlier In the day about some personal matter. When they met again In tho evening, at Arlon Hall, the quarrel was renewed. In the course of the argument Westernacher hit Fuchs, but the blows were by no means severe enough to cause him any bodily Injury of consequence.

The best proof of this lies In the fact that Fuchs remained at Arlon Hall for quite a whilo after Westernacher had left. Any attempt to connect Fuchs' death with this encounter seems to me like a malicious exaggeration. I saw the whob nffalr from beginning to end, and how any ono can claim mat Fuchs sustained Injuries worth while talking about goes beyond my understanding. By publishing the above yiu would Breully oblige LOWS 769 Greene avenuo, October 15, 1905. Says Westernacher Bolted Walton in 1899.

To the Editor of the Brooklyn Engle: Answering tho article In the Eagle of October 10, and referring to F. Lanzer's letter of tho Hth, I would like to ask how It hai-pened that Gottfried Westernacher, candidate for sheriff, failed as a regular Democrat to support William Walton, caiiilitnio for sheriff on Iho Democratic tlcK.t In 1199, Every one knows Westernacher bolle, Walton ln 1K99, as ho did Shepard in 1901. As Mr. Lanzer nys. Surely the self-respecting element In the llemocratlt don't want such a man for sheriff.

The fact of his being Indicted alone should bar him from such an ofllee. Wesiernacher does not stand alone. Mnny of us Democrats will not swallow such candidates as Rldgway. 'or borough rreslden, and Whliehousr, for Supreme Court Judge, when we can vote 'or eiioti cliizons as Joseph A. Burr and Mujnr Ebiiteln.
