I. City. Surrogate James C. Church returned to his offices In the Hall of Records this morning for the first time since he waa taken 111, two weeks ago. When ho appeared at 10:45 hifs entire office force fairly besieged his chambers to get an opportunity to shake bis hand and congratulate him on his return.

His Illness has left him very weak, nd he found it neceissary to remain seated during the impromptu reception. In fact, he baa been a much sicker man than his physician has let the public realize. Dr. Frederick 0. Holden allowed him to come down-town today only upon the condition that he wouid not attempt any work, and bis honor has decided to allow J.idge Asplnall to sit for him uatil Monday next.

"I am thankful to get back again," said Surrogate Church to an Eagle reporter. "I am looking forward to getting into my work again next Monday, and I will make things hustle, for, of course, they have piled up lu my absence. One of the greatest disappointments caused by my illness is that It has deprived me of my vote. This will be the flrBt election since I became of age In which I will not have cast my ballot." The Surrogate remained at his offices till shortly before noon. Many friends who were Informed of his return called to weicomo him.

He Is looking poorly, but he is rapidly convalescing.
