a a a a HITS PLAN TO EXPAND POLICY GROUP Washington, Oct. 3 (U.P) -Senate Republican leader William F. Knowland objected today to a proposal to overhaul the Senate G.O.P. Policy Committee in a move widely regarded as an effort to curb his powers. He voiced his criticism to reporters who questioned him as he returned from an around-theworld inspection tour.

He declined comment on the trip until after he can formally report to President Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. He saw the President for a few moments. The Policy Committee organization has been sug. gested by Senator Homer E. Capehart It calls for a policy committee-to lay out the legislative programcomposed of the 15 legislative committee chairmen.

As now formed, the policy group is composed of five G.O.P. Senators elected by the conference of all Senate Republicans and six appointed by the conference chairman, subject to approval of the conference. Knowland, who was elected party leader this year to succeed the late Senator Robert A. Taft, told reporters that he does not regard the Capehart plan as a "challenge" to his power. He said he merely felt that it would make the policy "committee too large and unwieldy." 19 Stricken at School Oklahoma City, Oct.

A rodeo worker said today "I really don't know" why he teetered drunkenly on a pole 100 feet above 2:000 horrified midway goers at the Mid-South Fair early today. Fireman J. B.

Sutton risked his life to climb the swaying stunt pole and talk Carl Clemens into coming down from the pole, where he had perched one hour and 48 minutes. Clemens. 31, unemployed carnival worker, said, "I'm worried about what they will say at home," after reaching the ground. During much of his time at the highest point, reached by climbing spikes on the 140- foot acrobats' pole, Clemens had swayed dizzily, frequently trying to shimmy up the remaining 40 feet. He always slid back, bring.

ing gasps from the crowd. He flayed his arms and legs. He would oaths at the crowd The crowd would shout back. Acrobat Douglas Foucheux climbed to within reach of the man's feet and got kicked in the head. Police at first thought Clemens was merely showing off before the crowd.

When a sound truck arrived, Marine Corpsman Paul Roberson pleaded with the crowd to disperse, saying: "A man's life is at stake." The throng shuffled back. about 15 feet. Firemen placed a net at the bottom of the pole. Sutton had to plead with authorities to let him try. After reaching a point just below Clemens he carried on a (SUICIDE JUMP FROM BRIDGE FOILED BY COPS A Brooklyn motorcycle cop, chasing a Manhattan speeding car across the Bridge yesterday, spotted a man cilmbing the side framework, stopped short and grabbed for the climber.

The cop, Patrolman Thomas Collins, managed to grab a leg and hang on, but the climber put up a terrific strug. gle, coming close several times to escaping Collins' grip and plunging into the river. The struggle continued until two traffic cops and patrolmen from 12 radio cars arrived. By the time an ambulance had been summoned and taken the climber off to Bellevue Hospital, traffic on the upper roadway had been snarled a half hour. Police identified the climber as Nicholas LaBrocca, 38, of 1012 39th Borough Park.

He told them he earns $70 a week, with $58 of it in take home pay, and was depressed by the difficulty of supporting his wife and three sons.
