GRANT TO TAKE REVIEW Will Visit the 47th Armory on Thanksgiving Eve.

Review and Reception Planned for Fourteenth Regiment Three Nights Later. Two reviews have been planned for Thanksgiving week by local militiamen. Major General Frederick Dent Grant. commanding the Department of the East, U. S.

has been invited to look over the troops of the Forty-seventh ment in the Eastern District, and the honor of review will be extended to him on Wednesday, November 23, Thanksgiving Eve. This will be the first public military affair of the season in Brooklyn. Three nights later there will be a regimental review and reception in the Fourteenth Regiment Armory, Eighth avenue and Fifteenth street, South Brooklyn. As yet Colonel Foote has not decided upon a reviewing officer. Armory, a regimental stag be held.

To-night in the third Regiment It is expected that fully two thousand members, recruits and possible recuits of the Bedford avenue organization will assemble in the big drill hall to enjoy the entertainment and listen to the returns as they come in. Colonel Foote of the Fourteenth Regiment last night appointed Sergeant James J. Byron of Company a second lieutenant. Byron has been a member of the company for the past seven years. Captain Louis S.

Quimby of Company Twenty-third Regiment, has tendered his resignation, and the papers were forwarded last night by Colonel Frank H. Norton to the Governor for acceptance. Captain Quimby has been in command of Company ever since it was mustered in a year and a half or two years ago. He was formerly a member of the Second Company, Signal Corps. He will undoubtedly 0e succeeded by First Lieutenant Edward Hodges, who has already been nominated for the position of captain.

Hodges is a physician and originally was an assistant surgeon in the regiment with the grade of captain. Preferring line work to staff work, he accepted a lower grade when Company was mustered in, and became its first I lieutenant. An application has been made to Colonel Norton for an election in Company for the purpose of choosing a successor to Captain Ball, recently resigned. First Lieutenant Frederick S. Greene has been in command since Captain Ball's retirement, and he is a candidate for the captaincy.

But there is, apparently, a split in the company, and two or more candidates for the captaincy will be in the field. JOHN W. DEVOY LECTURES. Brooklyn Public Library His Subject Before Knights of Columbus Council. John W.

Devoy, treasurer of the Brooklyn Public Library, at the close of the stated meeting of Columbus Council, K. of at its rooms in 81 Hanson place, last night delivered a lecture on "The Brooklyn Public Library," which, he said, is now the second largest in the United States. Mr. Devoy gave an outline of the establishment of libraries, or rather the formation of libraries, 1 in New York City as far back as 1700. He traced the organization private libraries down to 1800, when there were established circulating libraries.

At this period there seems to have been a stagnation in the growth of the library system until about 1860. when the circulating, or apprentice library, as it was called, was started in New York. It was at that time also when the library system was instituted in Brooklyn through private libraries, the outgrowth of which was the establishment of the Brooklyn Library, which had its home in the Athenaeum, at Clinton street and Atlantic avenue. In 1873 the present edifice in Montague street was erected and the efficiency of the service has steadily progressed ever since, particularly following the consolidation of the public library in 1892, under an act of the Legislature, for which an appropriation of $600,000 was made, The Astor-Tilden-Lenox foundation In Manhattan, which forms part of the New York Public Library, has the largest circulation. The circulation of the Brooklyn Library will this year amount to about 4,00,000.

With a crowd such as has never been seen in the house before, the Cortelyou Club brought to a close last evening the fair for the success of which the members have been working for past six months. Five times during the evening the committee was forced to close its doors, refusing admittance hundreds of enthusiastic men and women.

The doors i were opened at 3 o'clock in the Ten minutes later the ballroom, where the principal booths were placed, was crowded with young school children. At midnight there were nearby ten thousand visitors at the club. More than $10,000 was netted. Colyana of Coney Island drew the lucky ticket, and a purse containing $50 in gold, won by Mrs. J. Dorfler of Manhattan. The silk flag presented to the most popular society, was won by the Midwood Council, 1615, Royal Arcanum. There were a number of other valuable prizes, including a hand embroidered centerpiece captured by Miss Jeanne Park, and a velvet hat with a $75 willow plume won Miss Sullivan.

Great credit is due the committee for the absolutely fair way in which the prizes were drawn for. Standing on the platform, in full view of the entire assemblage, Louis Malthaner, the club president, announced through a megaphone the name of every prize about to be drawn for. The numbers were scattered in a large jardiniere, the winning drawn by little Miss Hilda Moehle, the ticket, with but few exceptions, co being 13-year-old daughter of the second vice president. There were eleven booths, the most popular of which was, perhaps, the sportung table, presided over by Mrs. Charles A.

Brown, with nearly fifty assistants. Each table had a prize for which all the "salesladies" solicited chances. Among the prize winners were: Electric lamp, William C. Bonney; collarette, Mrs. C.

a to a to 45, Police Commissioner James C. Cropsey, who lives in Flatbush, will be asked by his neighbors, some of whom are members of the Thirty-second Ward Taxpayerg Association, to use his power in opening the new One Hundred and Seventyfourth Precinct. The department has rented three cottages at Avenue near Flatbush avenue, and they are properly fitted up, but what the residents want is to have them filled up with "guardians of the law and preservers of the peace," asl Henry G. Green, president of the asso1 ciation puts it. Several dates have been mentioned as the formal opening day, but the department has been as changeable as a prima donna making her farewell appearance.

It is impossible to send any more police to Flatbush at present, as the a accommodations in the Snyder avenue station are not adequate to supply an addition. A resolution was adopted calling upon the Board of Estimate to make the million dollars available, that was appropriated last spring for the Jamaica Bay improvement. The federal appropriation contingent on the city's and if it is made usable by the board some progress can be made by the association toward the improvement of Jamaica Bay. Another resolution was passed indorsing the action of the parents association of Public School 152, on Avenue in recommending the adoption of a new drinking system for public school children. The old style of drinking from a cup is called unsanitary by the parents.

The style desired is the bubbling type. The parents, it is understood, will take the matter before the Legislature and try to have a bill passed compelling the Board of Education to use them for all the schools. The association favored the plan and will assist the parents in every way possible. The Brooklyn League has asked the association to indorse the four-borough plan for subway traffic, so that Brooklyn will obtain some of the $60,000,000 to be utilized, and to oppose the plan for a Tri-borough. The Thirty-second Ward went on record as favoring the fourborough route and a five cent fare to the Bronx from Brooklyn, Rapid Transit, as handed up by the B.

R. on Flatbush avenue, was given a black eye by several of the members, who declared that the service on that important line is bad. "There are not enough cars sent to the loop at Borough Hall nor to Manhattan, and they are always crowded," said one. "We get all the crowds that are dumped off the Ocean avenue line at Flatbush avenue and Avenue during the rush hours, and for one, have not traveled home nor to work comfortably once in many months." The company is now issuing transfers from Flatbush avenue to Church avenue, to the Brighton station, but are not issuing them from Flatbush to Church to Fifth. Nor did the B.

R. T. come off any better than the telephone company, as the charges of that company are regarded as exorbitant and an appeal will be made to the Public Service Commission of the Second Division to inquire into it. The point in question is this: The company charges $36 for a private party line and gives 600 calls for it. "We lose at 5 cents a call, just 50 cents a month, or $6 a year.

Any outside calls to Manhattan cost 10 cents, the same as from any pay station." EVERLASTINGLY. AT IT. Our persistent endeavor is 8 taxicab meter. Plain Dealer.
