The rase was clear one, and Billy Kanewa undoubtedly guilty ot burgury The Squire put hi spectacles on Ins none, and, turning to the law relative to tho casr, to his horror found the punishment was death and, not knowing there was any such thing a a trial by jury, after some preliminary remarks, proceeded to sentence B.lly to be hung on a certain day. Billy of course remonstrated but the justice told him that, though be belived he had spoken the truth in relation to the affair, yet, bythe letterof the law, be wae guilty of burglary, and the penalty of the law was death any person convicted thereof. There were no jails in that portion of the State at that time, and B.lly returned to his home with a sorrowing heart. 1 he caresses ol wile, and innocent prattle of the juvem.e Fanes, faded to ioue him Irom the deep dejection of spirits lie had fallen into, lie knew only that on a certain day he had to go and be hung, and that caused him exceeding disquietude.

He strove to labor in hia field lor a day or two, hut th horror ot lii situation rendered him powerless. The day fixed ujion for executum drew on ajiace, and Uillys anxiety of mind was horrible. Unsble any longer to bear up under the thought that oppressed him, he went to the magistrate to learn it anything could possibly be dons to save his neck Ir the halter. '1 lie Squire condoled with him, commraerated his hard fate, and expressed deep sorrow that the stern mandate of tho law required a sacrifice eo great; hut there was the law; and he, its worn administrator, could do nothing but see requirements fulfilled, tjqiire Noodlebury could devise no way to save Hilly, unless, on fair representations of the case being made to the Governor, he should interpose the Executive clemency, and parJon linn. Accordingly, he made a fair statement ol tho case, vouching fur Billys honeMty, and, regretting the necessity that had compelled him to pass sentence of death on him, begged Ins Exrellency to pardon hnn.

The next sax day Billy mountod on a stout gelding making Ins way with all convenient peed to the capitol, some four days ride distant, to endeavor to procure pardon Irom tho Governor. Arrived at the house, Billy found his Excellency at home, and with great huimhty handed him Squire Noodleburys letter. The Governor read it attentively, and with great difficulty suppressed the rising mirth which the ludicrousness of the affair provoked. Excuning himself for a moment, Old Toms retired to a haded grassplut near his mansion, and, rolling on the ground, gave vent to a loud and contin-uous volley of cachinations that could no longer be suppressed, and when he was able to resume hie gravity and usual dignity of demeanor, returned to the anxious culprit, and wrote hun an unconditional pardon and, after writing a note to the worthy Squire, informing him ol the fact that every citizen accused of crime was entitled to a trial by jury of his peers, handed them both to Billy, and sent him on his homeward course, rejoicing in his narrow escape from hanging. The scuffle ensued after the lights were put out, and as the company was about dispersing. Hobbs was stabbed ten times and died in twenty-nme hours. The savage assault was not anticipated by the party, or the fatal result imagined, till it occurred. The key to the fatal transaction is discovered in that one sentence. On comparing aucb drafts of tha eounty treasurers aa relate to the your eammittee find a email discrepancy. 'The report show the aum of $7349 92 to have been drawn for temporary relief, and the trees, nrere account shows the sum of $7141 40, from which it appears that they have drawn for $209 52 more than has been paid, for which the Suuerintendents account as follows: they gave a draft for th said amount of $208 52 lor temporary relief inWilliamsburgli, which draft has fallen in the hands of the Trustee of th Village, and that tha Trustee intend to return the draft to the treasurer aa excise cm n.ei- The report of the Physician ia brief and explicit, and your com mutes have every reason to lieiivve that the best attention has at all times been given to the enlortsnale inmates ef the estab.i.linieot requiring hie attentmo.
