L. U. Takes Up Work of Re cent Convention. The report of John J. Poote, delegate of the Central Labor Union to the recent Buffalo convention of the State Federation of Labor, was the chief topio of Interest at yesterday's meeting in the Labor Lyceum.

Some of the principal features especially Interesting to the C. L. U. members were the remarks of President Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor, who insisted that the Seamen's Law, to go Into effect in November, was In no sense forcing steamship lines out of business, as had been charged, but that such Pacific Coast lines as were giving up business were doing so because of the Panama Canal opening; that the Clayton Act, affirming that labor is not a commodity, is the "charter of America's Industrial Freedom," in a national sense, and that in respect of the European war the duty of workingmen was to democratize so far as possible the industrial system of the world, and where peace is finally secured the workers should get together and declare for the conditions upon which permanent peace can be built; meanwhile, labor should stand with the National Administration In preserving strict neutrality. President James P.

Boyle of the C. L. and Delegate James L. Gernon were chairmen of the Committee on Constitutional Convention and the Committee on President's Address, respectively. James P.

Holland of this borough was elected president, and Messrs. Guerin, Haustein, Curtis, King, Kovaleski, Mullaney, McGuire, Clark, Dehan, Engle and Miss Nellie Kelley of Syracuse the eleven vice presidents. Edward Bates of Utica was re-elected secretary-treasurer, and John J. Henley, Thomas D. Fitzgerald and William Fergueson make up the Legislative Committee.

Delegate Foots was unanimously thanked by a standing vote of the Central Labor Union for his exhaust ive report. Tonight In the Assembly Hall of the Labor Lyceum a mass meeting will be held under the auspices of District Council No. 1 of the Central Union Label Council and the Label Committee of the C. L. U.

The topics to be discussed are (1), "Organized Labor and the Union Label Propaganda." (2), "The Union Label in Its Relation to Unemployment." To be followed by free discussion and b. question box. The admission is free, and refreshments will be served. WEDDINGS TRICE MEAR9. A pretty wedding which took place on Saturday evening was that of Miss Edith Marie Mears, daughter of Mr.

The Sisters of Mercy, one of the best known religious orders, quietly celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of Its advent Into the Brooklyn diocese yesterday at the convent, Willoughby and Classon avenues.

Bishop Lough-lln was the prelate to Invite the Sisters Into the diocese, and the good work they have accomplished since coming here is well known. Today the Sisters have many parochial and Sunday schools under their charge as well as three orphan asylums. Besides the mother house on Willoughby avenue where more than 1,600 orphan girls are cared for, the Sisters conduct the Guardian Angel Home in Bay Ridge where 1,200 young children are taken care of. They have also a farm and a home for boys at Syosset, L. I.

The parochial and Sunday schools under the Sisters' guidance include St. Patrick, Kent avenue; Sacred Heart, Adelphi street; St. Jerome, Nostrand avenue; St. Brigid, Linden street; St. Gregory, Brooklyn avenue; St.

Lucy, Kent avenue, and Holy Innocents, on Beverley road. MADE A DESPERATE JUMP. Then Man on Probation Was Locked Vp. George S. Goodwin, 55 years old, of 241 Putnam avenue, broke away from his guards yesterday as he was being taken from the Gates avenue court room to the cells, and jumped out of a second story window landing on an extension fifteen feet below and lacerating his left eye.

Goodwin was arrested sometime ago at the instance of his wife, Mary, charged with disorderly conduct, and was nut on probation by Officer Daniel V. WcCann. Saturday morning he was in court charged by Officer Mc-Cann with having broken his probation. Magistrate Steers held him in $200 bail for examination Monday. It was while passing a washroom on the way back to the detention pen that Goodwin made his attempt to escape.

He was locked up without further charge. BENEFITS OF POVERTY. Registrar Tou want' a marriage license, eh! That'll cost you thirty shillings. Youth But I've only got one pound. Registrar Then you're lucky.

A Brockville man, who has a home in Scotland to which he returns In the winter, bought an expensive fur cap In this country to give to his gamekeeper.

Two years ago last winter he took It over and presented It to the old man, who was delighted with it. The cap was very serviceable, hav ing flaps that came down over the earsi and would wear about a lifetime. The next winter the American returned to Scotland and noticed, to his surprise, that the old man did not wear the fur cap. "What is the matter -with the cap I gave you last winter he asked. "I haven't worn It since the acci dent," replied the old gamekeeper.

The man from Brockville pondered. You didn write me concerning any accident, ne said. "No?" mused the gameJteeper. "A mon offered me a glass of whisky and I didn't hear him." Everybody's Magazine. NOT A BAD IDEA.

"If we wero to have -war with Ger many, how the dickens could' we fight 'em? That's what I can't see," said Dubbleigh. "No trouble about that," said Wig. glethorpe. "We could put Colonel Roosevelt at the head of his Rough Riders and Colonel Bryan In command of his Rough Riders and have one grand battle at the Madison Square Garden, using the gate money to de fray the expenses of the war.
