Hopkinson Smith, 76 years old, author, artist, engineer and lecturer, who has been a familiar figure before audiences of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences for years, always giving delight with his genial personality and fine readings from his own works, died last night from a complication of diseases, after an illness of only ten days, at his residence, 150 East Thirty-fourth street, Manhattan.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, who was Miss Josephine Van Deventer, and one son, F.Berkeley Smith, an artist and writer. F. Hopkinson Smith was born In Baltimore, on October 23, 1838, the son of Francis Hopkinson Smith, Nullum S. Jonas.

Artist, Ensincpr and Lecturer at th. Brooklyu lilstituto. a wealthy iron founder and dealer in hardware in Baltimore. One of his ancestors, Francis. Hopkinson, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and an artist.

Mr. Smith's father lost his fortune and young Smith, confronted with tho problem of making his own way, began work as a clerk in a hardware store at $4 a week. Later coming to New York city while the Civil War was in progress, he obtained a number of engineering contracts and soon had a fortune of over $50,000. Among his engineering accomplishments was the building of the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty on Bedloe's Island. He built the heavy sea wall at Governor's Island and the one at Tompkinsvllle, S.

1., and later constructed tho Race Hock Lighthouse, off New London, which was one of the engineering feats in which he took the most pride. Mr. Smith was a water color artist of international fame and his works have been exhibited in. all tho important cities of thijs country and in many foreign salons. As an author his writings possessed a peculiar charm that took the popular fancy, and which was reflected in his readings before the public, Among his books are: "A Day at Laguerre's," descriptive of a small French restaurant on the Bronx River: "A Gentleman Vagabond," "The Other Fellow," "The Under Dog," "Colonel Carter's Christmas," "At Close Range."
