slow and a better tone to the cash market. The conviction is very strong among leading export dealers that at the best wheat will not be exported the Black Kea before early summer, and possibly later. It is claimed that in addition to all the otlier defences arrangements have been made lor the sinking of vessels loaded with stone In the narrow channel. There is active demand for freight room, and charters aro reported of forty steamers the past week for all kinds of grain. The wheat market was firm in the late trade, on reports that several governments were inquiring and taking wheat.

i'ho corn market was strong and active, with a good volume of buying, influenced by the strength In other Brain and reports of foreign demand. It is understood that France has nntiglit some corn the past week, and there were reports of good inquiry this morning. The fact, however, that prices have declined so largely from the high point has led to considerable effort to reinstate holdings. Corn was strong toward the close, on further export buying and short covering. Oats trading was fairly active and tli'- market much steadier.

Values were influenced by the better tone in other grain and also by the fact of the recent good export business. There were rumors tbat further business was likely to develop either today or the earlv part of next week. Trading in hug products was moderately active, with prices fairly steady. Hogs were a little lower today, but the movement for next week al Chicago was estimated at only showing considerable falling off in the country selling. Future Markets at New York.

Influenced by weaknefa in America ves-terday and entlmenlal effect of better news from the Dardanelles. Broomhall says: The spot market is comparatively steady at '3 to IVjd decline, with most pressure In American winters. Cargoes and parcels are weak, with winters offered at 9d to a shilling; lower, while Plate are about unchanged. Prospects are for larger Indian offers and freer Argentine shipments, but the demand for Immediate shipment continue, and indications point to smaller American shipments this week. The Liverpool corn market was Inclined lower, with easy American cables and a quiet 'uneumpttve demand; Argentine weather la unfavorable and Plate offers firm.

Renewed expansion in trade, says Bradatreefs, especially in the Southwest, further up in industrial operations, and excellent advices as to winter wheat go hand in hand with optimism, which, however, is tempered by conservative buying. In fact, while the week has witnessed an inflow of visiting buyers at leading centers, thus stimulating house trade in spring goods, the dominant trait evidenced is to continue the long-practiced policy of buying in rather small parcels, which involves frequent shopping.

Nevertheless, trends seem to run in a favorable direction, though it cannot be said that trade Is as yet normal or that It is as good as that done in the best of years. Retail trade throughout the country remains on the quiet side, the appearance of spring-like weather over a wide area having stimulated distribution by jobbers, rather than from the counters of final purveyors, with whom stocks are light. But at the moment there is no disposition to speculate as to the future, partly because it Is deemed prudent to wait for expansion in the curtailed purchasing power of those dependent upon industrial operations, and partly because banks are carefully scrutinizing credits, even though money is cheap. Contemporaneous with this situation is the undeniably better aspect of industrial affairs, which, although a long way from full activity are going forward, progress being of a cumulative character, with war orders furnishing activity to a number of lines. The volume of trade continues moderate, says Duns Review, but is fairly well maintained.

Any more rapid development of business activity and confidence is, for the time being, checked through the anxiety created by the growing Intensity of the European war, and especially by the uncertainty as to the effect upon neutral shipping and oversea trade of the recent war zone order. The market for both wheat and cotton have been conspicuously disturbed during the week by the foreign situation. There is, moreover, evidence in the stock market of larger foreign liquidation of securities, and the weakness of exchange also reflects the widespread perplexities of the international outlook. Meanwhile, the great volume of exports of food products, war materials and manufactured articles continues and in the latest week the trade balance in favor of this country aggregated about. $32,000,000.

February iron and steel business has been on a broader scale of production, with a hopeful outlook for March. In the textile markets there Is fair activity and the cotton and woolen mills are well employed, but it. is characteristic of the slluation that while stocks In retailers hands are not heavy, the latter are adopting this policy of buying only for Immediate needs. This requires frequent purchases of comparatively small quantities, the aggregate of which is considerable. Tho railroads display some Increase in confidence, although their earnings still fall short of last year, and the number of idle cars is greater.
