Whether the death of Vice President Sherman will have any effect upon the electoral machinery of the country was a matter discussed In national political circles today.

While there seems to be no room for confusion, there is the possibility that It may give rise to a condition unique In our history. There has been much speculation as to whether the electoral college will fall to give a majority to any of the candidates for President. If such should be the outcome of this year's election, the duty of electing a President would devolve upon the House of Representatives, which would under the Constitution vote upon the names ot the three highest candidates. Each State will have but one vote. The House is tied on State delegations, twenty-two being Republican, twenty-two being Democratic, and four being unable to vote because they aro split evenly.

In the event of a failure of the House to elect, the yiee President, would become President on March 4 next. Provision is made lu tho Constitution, In case the electoral college falls to choose a Vice President through lack of a majority, that the Senate shall proceed to elect one. The Senate is allowed to vote on two names only, those of the two leading candidates In the eleotoral college. The Republican party today has no candidate for Vice President, and will t-avo none before election. The National Committee will meet in Chicago on November 12 to fill the vacancy caused by Mr.

Sherman's death, but the party will have to go lo the polls without a candldnte, although Sherman's name will undoubtedly appear on bnlloth In several of the States, many of them having already been printed. It Is understood, ot course, that whoever la chosen by the National Committee will receive the votes of whatever Republican electors may be chosen, although they have a constitutional right to vote for whom they please. In case the election should cipher down to the Senate. It Is well recognized that Governor Thomas R. Marshall, the Democratic candidate for vlco president.
