Just Between It's Up to the Girl to Say Good Night First After Late Date can a girl end a know whether or not for a little while when if I should make the Nancy Mottram Nancy Mottram the door, but it's up to by saying good night that you had a wonder- (Q.) DEAR NANCY Several my friends and I have different opinions on just when it's too late to accept a date, and we wish you'd give us your opinion. Suppose a fellow calls around suppertime on Saturday night and suggests going out that night? I think it shows that he's probably phoned a few others before he finally got around to calling you, and nobody wants to feel that she's the last choice.

And saying you'll go at that hour seems as though you've been passed by for a date and will say yes to anybody just to go out. Some of the others feel that it's better to have a late invitation than none at all and if the boy didn't want to go out with you he wouldn't have bothered to call at all. But it's certainly not flattering to have anyone call just an hour or so before and expect you to be so anxious to have a date that it doesn't matter when the invitation comes. Could you give us some advice about this? (A.) Whether you go or not depends on the situation and the boy. If you haven't any other plans and he phones with an invitation to a party or suggests a movie and meeting everyone afterwards, there's no reason to sit home on the chance that you were second choice.

That, of course, is if the fellow is just a casual friend and there's no suggestion that he's slighted you by asking so late. But don't make it a steady practice. Sometimes it's better to say no, that you have other plans, just to avoid having the word get around that you're always available at the last That goes double if the lad is someone you're interested in. Then it doesn't do a bit of harm to let him know by saying "sorry" that he's too late. Next time he'll call earlier to be sure of seeing you.

Use your own judgment; but making an iron-bound rule that Saturday afternoon is past the accepted time will leave you with a lot of empty Dorothy M.
