The scattered crackling of firecrackers and pistols in the streets would have been inaudible in the roars of cheers about the athletic fields. Tourney Winners Announced. The official count of tickets in the continuous handicap tournament of the Brooklyn Chess Club, for the quarter ending June 30, revealed the fact that A. C.

Cass was the winner of the chief percentage prize, with W. G. Tirrell and II. Valentine winners of the second and third prizes respectively. To Dr.

J. Russell Taher again went the special prize for the highest aggregate of victories during the quarter. His percentage (.552) was also excellent. The sporting calendar of the New Moon Club is always attractive, but is especially so on Independence Day. Baseball, lacrosse, tennis, golf and lawn bowling were the principal sports, and each pastime attracted Its own devotees to enjoy the proceedings. The curtain of the lacrosse season was finally lowered when the Benches Lacrosse Club of Toronto, Canada, defeated the Crescent team by a score of 4 to 3. The game was by far the best and most interesting contest staged on the grounds this season, and it was a toss up as to the ultimate winner up to tho last few minutes of play. The New Mooners only defeated the.

Beaches by a close margin last Saturday after the hardest kind of playing. The Canadians considerably improved their general playing yesterday and started homo for their native hearths shortly after the contest, feeling elated over their great victory. During the first period the Ridgites had a shade the better, although the playing waf nip and tuck at all times. Hallock netted the first goal six minutes after the start of paly. Keppler, a minute later, tallied another goal amid the wild plaudits of the multitude.

Tho visitors braced considerably, and by cool-headed playing managed to bring the ball down the field. Stevenson then shot a neat goal after a brief scrimmage. The period ended with the scoreboard showing Crescent A. Beaches, 1. The Crescents Increased their lead after the intermission when Roy Taylor legged it down the field and, without any assistance, caged a magnificent shot from a difficult angle.

Love-grove, who played so well last Saturday for the Beaches, made things hum by scoring right after Taylor. Stevenson tallied another goal, making the score three all. With five minutes to play, It remained for the "Poet" Longfellow to win the honors for his mates by crashing through the Crescent's strong defense for the deciding tally. The lineup: Crescent A. C.

Announced in Seven.

Announced mates in seven moves are not the order of the day, even at the Brooklyn Chess Club, but once in a while a player, more ambitious than the rest, takes the pains to make the necessary computation and takes chances with his adversary's heart action by making the dread declaration. A dramatic conclusion of this sort was reached during the week in a game at knight odds between N. B. Webster and W. Olsen.

The former, who conceded the odds, sacrificed a rook, queen and knight in succession in order to obtain the coveted climax, which forms as pretty a bit of chess as has been seen at local chess headquarters in many a day. The game furnishes a good example of the kind of handicap chess which is produced off and on at the Brooklyn Chess Club. The score follows: KING'S GAMBIT DECLINED. 100-yard dash (P. H.

At Prospect ParK, the Manhattans obtained the verdict by an innings and 22 runs over Kings County, while the Association game at Livingston was in favor of Manor Field. Wins at Ball. The ball tossers of the New York Athletic Club again took the measure of the Crescent Athletic Club by a score of 5-0. Although the score might Indicate a one-sided contest, it was far from being so. The two clubs have always been great athletic rivals and whenever the teams meet the fur sure does fly. Superior all around playing was the big factor in the New Yorkers success.

They outbatted and played better ball on the defensive than the home lads, while Williams outpitched Geery, the young Crescent pitcher, who did the twirling in the absence of Harvey Turnure. The New Mooners had many opportunities to score, but fell down badly in the pinches. In three consecutive innings the first batters up singled, but were left stranded. Williams had the Indian sign on Eddie Ditmar's boys, allowing hut five scattered hits. Geery was somewhat of a disappointment and weakened badly with men on the paths.

In all he was touched up for twelve hits. Sterrett played an excellent game in the left pasture for the losing aggregation and garnered two of the five bingles made off Williams. Cam-pazzi's fielding at third was also noteworthy. The boys from across the Bridge who starred were Catcher Speers, who banged out three bingles, and Berrigan and Walters, who played short and second, respectively. The Crescent A.

C. will play the O'Keefe Lynch Insurance Brokers team next Saturday at Bay Ridge. The score: Cersecent A. C. I N.

First Handicap Race Is Set for July 14 Members of the Handicap Class of Long Island Sound have decided to give their first race on Saturday, July 14, off the New Rochclle Yacht Club.

The regatta will be open only to members of the class. An invitation to all yachtsmen who race on the Sound, who own boats from 40-foot-ers down, was sent out today, inviting them to Join the class so that they will be eligible to race. Fort Niagara, who examined Duffy after the latter was dropped by a body blow Dr. Gavlord said there was no evidence of a foul blow. Bartfleld was winning easily when he dropped Duffy twice for nine seconds in the second round and again in the third.

Plenty of Fireworks On Ridgewood Field If not elsewhere, there was plenty of fireworks at Ridgewood Field yesterday. The Royal Giants got sweet revenge for the defeat sustained last Sunday at the hands of the Philadelphia Giants, winning both games of the double-header, 16 to 6 and 13 to 0. The batting of Harvey and Earle and the base running of Pettus were features of the early game. Pitcher Harvey elevated slightly in the eighth inning, but the rally fell far short. The second contest developed into a farce in the fifth inning.

Webster and Hewett made brilliant plays. String Beans Williams' pitching was gilt-edged. After allowing two hits in the sixth frame and with the bases full he struck out the mighty Pettus. Next Sunday will see some new men in the Bushwick lineup. They will take on the D.

S. C. and Philadelphia Pros. The scores; Unique Race at Bergen Beach. Rather an unique race was held at the Bergen Beach Yacht Club on Sunday.

Its idea was to show the efficiency of boats, based on propeller factors. Eight craft started and covered an eight mile course. Captain Arthtlr Brown's Tamaha captured the special efficiency prize. Cups also were won by Rear Commodore J. E.

The Colonial Yacht Club will hold its sixth annual race to Cornfield Lightship and return under sanction of the American Power Boat Association, on Saturday. In spite of the fact that many of the yacht clubs have called off their races for the season on account of the war, Commodore Mahnken of the regatta committee has decided that those who are not actively engaged in the service would be greatly benefited by entering the Cornfield Lightship race, as it gives splendid opportunity to utilize all knowledge of navigation.

The course will be from the Colonial Yacht Club at 140th street and Hudson River around the South End of Manhattan Island, up the East River, past Throggs Neck, Steppt, Stone and Execution Lights. Compass course east, one-half north to and around the Lightship, returning via the same course, making a total distance of 183 nautical miles. Race starts at 2 p.m. FLATBUSH S. S.

Keen rivalry existed in the match between the teams presided over by W. Duncan and Malcolm McNeill. Skillful bowling at critical moments of the game won for the latter team by 20 to 18.

The final match saw Dave Dver and his colleague a winner over Archie Best's charges by 20 to 16. Dutch Brandt and Harry Nelson have been signed to meet at the Broadway Sporting Club on Saturday night. Cumberland, July 5 Al McCoy, middleweight champion, and Jackie Clark, of Allentown, fought ten rounds with no decision at Lonaconlng yesterday. The crowd gave Clark the better of it on points.
