EME.VT O.Vi 'RBTK FOUNDATION1 ON seeing the buperbas, or the other fellows, for a long time make a specialty of winning games in the eighth or ninth innings with two out, the Superbas sprang a variation by winning in the tenth inning with one out.

Charles D. Stengel introduced this midsummer novelty when he thumped a home run over the right field wall in the tenth round, off the first ball served to him by Bill Doak, the eminent spitball expert. At that time the score was 1 to 1, with the doughty Doak pitching at a most alarming rate. If the game had not been won by such a fell blow it might never have been won at all, as Sherrod Smith and Doak were pitching as if the country's future was at stake. That handy wallop by Stengel brought the Superbas back to a point where they need only a paltry pair of straight winnings to make their percentage stand at even .500.

As Spectacles Lee Meadows pitched and beat the Superbas on Monday, and Doak sedmed to be about the next best bet Miller Huggins had at his disposal, the Superbas have more than a reasonable chance to take THE ROA FROM MAI to be held the (. oiinlv (amrl House in the Borough of llrooklTB. la The city of Krs Yolk, on the day of 11)17. at 10 o'clock la the forenoon of iht ilar. or soog thenaffer ss Couusel ran he heard taSCSOP.

As the open champion of the coun-try, Evans, an amateur, will be in the field, the pros will naturally seek to get square with him for having shut them out of the national title last year at Minikahda. This medal event on Tuesday will precede the team matches of twelve men on a side of amateurs, and Scotch-bred, English-bred and homebred pros.

The women will be able to do their "bit" on Monday, for a curtain-raiser has been arranged in the shape of mixed foursomes In which a professional will play with woman player from his own club. This competition will permit the public to see Mrs. Gavin, the English golfer, now the metropolitan and Eastern champion, In action on the links. An admission fee of $1 will be charged the gallery at all tho matches. Nichalls' Knee Cap Bars Him.

The injury to Gil Nichalls, the Great Neck pro. and former metropolitan champion, which has Incapacitated him from war service, causing his rejection by recruiting officers, was sustained in an automobile accident IEGKMAN UISIANA AVE. la aa follows: 1 to -'il-grad. lint atone aat The announcement by Chick Evans, open and amateur golf champion of the United States, that he will take part in the thirty-six-hole medal play, open to amateurs and professionals, at Englewood, next Tuesday, is especially pleasing to the Professional Golfers Association that is arranging the series of big matches of next week for the benefit of the war funds. In this event on Tuesday there will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals for the winners, with a special prize for the best score In each round.

In addition to Evans it is possible that Ned Sawyer of Chicago will come, and even the 1915 amateur champion, Robert A. Gardner of Chicago, may be able to take part. There is no evidence of military slackness In Evans' appearance in competitive play these days as, although he is registered for the army draft, he is practically exempt from conscription as he Is the only sole support of his aged parents. However, Evans is doing his "bit" to the best of his ability by playing in Red Cross exhibition matches. Thus far, as already stated in The Eagle, such matches have gathered about $20,000 for the benefit of war relief.

To the Western golfers will be added Tuesday the amateur stars of the metropolitan district, including the four-time winner of the national ama l-A A i I A No 732. July n. 1 year. per cent, Rust in to Boshwick Sav Bank 16-1791) $2,000 Assignments of Mortgages. JULY 17.

roil CURBING, LATINO SIDEWALKS AND Brooklyn's only big trotting and pacing meet of the season got under way at the Kings Highway track of the Parkway Riding Club yesterday, when the opening session of the three-day harness meeting provided some of the most interesting competition ever seen in this borough. No less than sixteen heats were required to decide the three events on the program, one race bringing the horses out seven times. The feature on the card was a 2:24 trot that went to six heats before Mintmark, belonging to Charles Wei-land, was returned the winner. Mint-mark started off slowly and failed to show well In the first two heats, which went to Suldlne, the property of the Brook Farm. The latter was a strong favorite and appeared like a straight-heat victor.

In the third heat, however, the first choice tired badly In the stretch and Mintmark, finishing strongly, crossed the wire in front. The latter had the more stamina and finally gained the decision in the sixth heat. The longest contest of the day was the 2:18 trot, in which C. W. La Sell's The auction sale nf the Lynbrook Estates property, at Lynbrook.

The entertainment features, which were distinctly unusual, proved very popular with the local people. The evening sale, which opened at 7:30, was also popular, and the mammoth tent on the property was taxed to capacity. The property la being sold to satisfy a mortgage foreclosure, and several Long Island and Brooklyn builders hava taken advantage of this unusual opportunity to secure some of the "Casey" Got R-e-e-venge On a "Riding" Fan the remaining two games of the series.

He not only had the satisfaction of winning In the manner dear to the ballplayer's heart, but he rubbed It into a fan who had been "riding" him all afternoon near the first base line. As he turned first and saw the ball had gone Into the great beyond, Stengel looked around and began kidding his kidder with mouth and hands at such a rate that the fans were afraid he would forget to touch all the bases and bring some sort of a taint on the run, but Stengel makes very few mistakes, and religiously touched every hassock after he had had his fling at the noisy one. Paul Defeats Minneapolis. The Town and Country Club of St. Paul, won the Twin City trophy for team superiority in connection with last Saturday's State championship qualifying play. It was expected that Minikahda of Minneapolis would capture this prize, as it had for its team captain the four-time winner of the Trans-Mississippi championship, Harry G. Legg.

However, Town and Country has some excellent players, Including Dudley Mudgc, who won the medal prize at Detroit in the 1915 national championship. How to Stop a Gallery. Probably the most dramatic scene of the entire final between Ouimet and Edwards was enacted when the doughty Captain Jenks, chairman of the house committee, who had been trying to restrain the gallery, dashed madly up a bunker, planted his flag and roared to his staff, "Hold 'em at the trap." San Juan waned before this vivid scene, and as for the escapades of Mad Anthony Wane, one simply had to admit, says the Chicago Herald, that Jenksie had 'em cheated into oblivion. That the former amateur and open champion, Travers, is determined to give an exhibition in keeping with his great reputation Is shown by the fact that for several days he has been down at Pine Valley, in the Philadelphia district, tuning up for next week's play, as he has been doing little playing this season and felt he was getting rusty. Pine Valley being one of the hardest courses in the country, Travers believes he can most quickly get back into form by practicing there. to right in the fifth, with one out. Gonzales bounced to Johnston, who was in too big a hurry and fumbled, Betzel scoring with the Cardinals' only run. Gonzales died stealing. Smith and his support gave the Cards a cruel Jolt in the eighth, when St. Louis filled the bases, with none out, and failed to put over a run.

Gonzales walked. Doak drove to Smith, whose throw to second pulled Cutshaw off the bag, and both runners were safe. Jack Miller batted for Jack Smith and dumped a sacrifice bunt to Mowrey. who fumbled a bit, and the bases were full. Smith screwed down the safety valve, put on a full head of steam and whiffed Douglass Baird for the first out.

Tommy Long bounced to Cutshaw, whose perfectly good shot to the plate forced Gonzales. Hornsby slammed a bounder squarely Into the hands of Mike Mowrey at third. Mike didn't have to move two feet to touch third and force Miller coming up from second. The Superbas crowded two of their four errors into that runless inning which woud indicate that the luck Is changing for the better, especially as Smith, a hitherto hard-luck pitcher was on the mound. The Chicago Cubs are being tamed often enough to make them splendid Cabinet material.

Three for Smith. Sherrod Smith has won his last three starts, and the last two have been won in the tenth. One was yesterday and the other ten-inning finish was when he beat the Pirates on July 13 by 2 to 1. Oddly enough, the first of his three straight winnings came when the Superbas beat the Cubs at Ebbets Field on July 7 by a batting rally against Demaree that netted two runs in the ninth, with one out. It was rather an oversight when he neglected.

His home-run punch In the tenth Inning yesterday was not such a surprise, after all. Stengel made one of the three hits In the seventh Inning yesterday that resulted In a run and saved the Superbas from defeat In nino tnnlngs. The day before he made one of three hits off Meadows. It was a triple, and 'he scored on Wheat's sacrifice fly. Two errors, combined with three hits by the Cards In the eighth, with two out, let In two runs and prevented Stengel's run from winning.

His hit Jn the second inning on July 14 started the run by which the Superbas beat Pirates In the second game by 1 to 0. His hit in the third Inning of the first game with the Pirates on July 13 drove in the first two runs and Brooklyn won by 4 to 0. Stengel's Single, with one out, In the ninth on July 7 opened the bombardment which resulted In two runs and the defeat of the Chicago Cubs by 5 to 4. And po on. C.

D. Stengel is quite there as a strong finisher. Parisian suffragettes before the the war were at least logical when they loudly bawled for the prerogative of being guillotined. Freak Game. 8mlth allowed the Cardinals four hits and the Superbas made six oft Doak.

Smith fanned two men and Doak fanned three. It is doubtful if any fan ever saw more balls driven directly to the in-flelders than were on exhibition in this game. Not a single hard put-out was made by the Cardinals. Hornsby, at short, had eight assists and probably did not run 50 feet in handling those eight chances. On about five of the eight he scarcely moved at all.

Almost the same was true of Betzel, at second, who had six assists. Oddly enough, only one chance for an assist was offered Baird at third. Then he was given a dubious error for failing to handle Mowrey's sacrifice bunt in the eighth Inning. Nor were any assists made Paulette, at first base. One of Hornsby's assists was in the run-down of Hi Myers, in the first inning, when Myers drove to the right of Paulette for a single, and was then Mintmark, by Bingen Mlnter (t.eese) VENTRAL AV, 8, 48 ft Hart st, runs Suldlne, b.

Huggins became violently enraged on Monday in the fifth Inning when Mr. Levy, who occupied a seat in a box near third base, began joshing him about having paid the waiver price for Jimmy the former Brooklyn utility inflelder. Huggins went to the rail and threatened to "get" Mr. Levy, who, he said, had been nagging him for three years. Umpire Rigler shooed Huggins away.

Mr. Levy said he had used no bad language toward Huggins nor had he guyed him unduly, and that he would protest to the head of the league. He did so. Governor Tener received the letter today and is expected to take action or Institute an inquiry today or tomorrow. Notice b.

He also had many a great racer under him in the big stake events. He was a great Judge of pace and a strong finisher. Over a short distance of ground Miller was a bear. He had a strong pair of hands and could handle the high-spirited steeds and could Just fly away from the barrier.

If he ever happened to be on the post position with a. mount he put daylight between his horse and the rest of the field right at the start. Many records in race riding have been hung up by Miller which still stand for the present-day Jocks to shoot at. Rode Eight Successive Winners. It was in 1906 that Miller set a record never equalled, when he rode eight winners in succession, winning the last five races on the card and the first three on the following day.

Fellows who were lucky enough to string with Miller in every one of these events, made a bookie take to the woods. Miller also rode five winners out of five mounts on three different occasions on various tracks. Miller set a record when he carried off $11 9,346 with the great Colin, winning the Futurity, the Brighton Junior Stakes, the Champagne Stakes, the Grand Union Stakes, the Saratoga Special, the Great Trial Stakes, the Matron Stakes, the National Stallion race and the Tidal Stakes. 107 AND 123. he never will retire, he asserts, until he has defeated Moran. The big blond Pittsburger always has had Coffey's number. The Roscommon giant was going along at a great rate when he stacked up against Moran. He had stopped Jack "Twin" Sullivan, Arthur Pelky, Soldier De-laney, One Round Davis, Al.

Reich, Jim Flynn and Jack Reed, all in less than ten rounds, and his followers believed that he was the logical man to meet Willard'. Still After Moran. Then along came Moran. They met on October 19, 1915, and to the surprise of the boxing world Moran swung his famous "Mary Ann" punch and Coffey took the count in the third round. His defeat did not lessen his The time allowed for tho completion of the work and the full performance of the contract I Chicago was second in total number total number of runs made by opponents.

Cincinnati was second in errors; second in left on bases and more runs had been scored against the team than any other club in the league. Pittsburg, in last place, had made the third largest number of errors and had next to the largest number of runs scored against by opponents. Boston was the third in left on bases, The compilations showed a more complicated situation in the American League. Boston, the leading team on that date, was second in runs scored, but in other respects was playing close, careful but not particularly brilliant baseball. The Chicago White Sox, right on Boston's heels, lead In greatest number of runs, but, strange to say, had the third largest number of runners stranded.

Detroit was third in run-making; second in hitting, while St. Louis led In the greatest number of safe drives registered, with Cleveland third. St. Louis spoiled her hitting record by piling up the greatest number of errors, with Cleveland second and Washington third. Cleveland had more runners left on bases than any of the other teams in the American League, with New York second and Chicago third.

The New York club was in third place, notwithstanding that the opposing teams had made more runs against the Gothamites than any of the other seven combinations. St. Louis and Philadelphia, the two tail-enders on July 7, were sec-end and third respectively in this department of the records. The Superbas had ,21 assists to 19 by the Cardinals. Mike Mowrey, at third, was offered assist chances on eight grounders and accepted six of them. Also, in the eighth inning, with three on bases 'and two down, Hornsby bounced into Mike's hands, at third, forcing Jack Miller, who was on second, and saving a ticklish situation.

Olson had six assists at short. One of those was when he got an assist and an out on a double play in the third. Doak had walked and been forced by Jack Smith. Baird drove to Olson, who touched second and threw out Baird. Whereas, Betzel, at second for the iCards, had six assists on grounders, at second for Brooklyn, had 'only two such chances.

Smith is a left-handed pitcher and Doak is a right-hander. Figure it out for yourself why so many blows off Smith went to third and short, and so many off Doak went to short and second. The batting rally by which the Superbas scored their first run yesterday and saved themselves from losing in nine innings was a curiosity in a game that threatened to be as dull as a day in the Missing Persons Bureau of the Police Department. Hi Myers had scratched a single to first In the first inning, with two out, on 'a ball that went to the right of Paulette. The first baseman got It but nobody covered. Myers was caught off first and put out. Nary another Superba reached first until two were out in the seventh inning.

There then was a demand for another Moran-Coffey bout. It was staged on January 7, 1916. Although Coffey was somewhat timid he did decidedly better than in their first meeting. In the ninth round Moian again swung his "Mary Ann" and again the Irish boxer was counted out. That fight convinced all but Jim Coffey that Frank Moran was his master.

When Jim Jeffries started his celebrated come-back stunt to save the white race prior to the Reno battle, he spent almost a year touring the country with a burlesque company. That was a highly novel and lucrative manner In which to prepare for an important battle. Jess Wlllard also had a money-making way of working for a contest. All Brooklyn fans remember the "two bit" matinees the big fellow used to give at the Amsterdam Opera House prior to his fight with Frank Moran in Madison Square Garden. But it rests with Jim Coffey, the Roscommon giant, to select the most unusual place to prepare for an Important battle.

Coffey has hopes of meeting Moran in August or early in September and to harden up for the contest, the former Third avenue mo-torman is working at Maryknoll, a Roman Catholic seminary, conducted by the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, near Ossining, N. Y. Not that Jim is actually boxing at Maryknoll. He is just living the simple life followed by the seven priests and the three lay brothers who form the seminary. He is up at sunrise each day and after a simple breakfast, he is out in the fields, working on the big farm adjoining the seminary.

Here he toils throughout the day. He plows, harrows, rolls the fields, weeds In the gardens, wheels truck around in a barrow and does all the other hard work of a farm hand. 'Tls a Great Lllfe," Says Coffey. The big Irish boxer is the guest of the Rev. Father James A.

Walsh, head of the Maryknoll seminary. The fighter and the priest are great friends and when the latter asked Coffey to spend a few weeks at Maryknoll, the boxer was only too glad to accept the offer. "It's a great life," said Coffey, writing to a friend in Brooklyn. "I am up with the sun and am in bed long before the average bout starts in town. The work on the farm is doing me a lot of good and I never felt better In all my life." When the story broke that Coffey was an Inmate of a seminary the boxing world at once began to wonder If the Roscommon giant had decided to give up the ring and devote the balance of hlB days to a religious life.

He was known to be ardently devoted to religious ceremonies and as he Is only 25 and unmarried, the story met with some credence.
