DAVIS Society Editor Comment "No man is born wise; wisdom is born of experience," is a quotation we picked up in California and which was a sufficient excuse to take off on a tour last weekend. Your correspondent and her companion, Miss Anna Duryea of 382 Sterling Place, set off on a Pennsylvania Dutch tour and as the Pennsylvania Dutch say it was "wunnerbor" or wonderful.

It was one of the Parker tours arranged by former Brooklynite Stanley A. Parker and Robert H. Shattuck of 61 Waldorf Court. Although it was intended as purely a pleasure trip, it certainly did turn out to be educational for 31 tourists who learned a great deal about the Amish and the Mennonites and other religious sects often referred to as "Plain People." We were rather surprised to find in the United States a place where a distinctive native dress is worn. We thought of it formerly as something to look for in foreign countries only.

We saw these rural folk still wearing styles unchanged since the eighteenth century. A bearded man indicates that he is married and the cleanshaven man is single. The men wore sombre black, anklelength, cuffless trousers; collarless coats and wide-brimmed hats and the women were in gay-colored frocks of exceedingly simple lines with various styled bonnets designating their different religions. However, there were other Mennonites who dressed according to the dictates of modern fashion. These people are ranked among the world's ablest farmers.

Our headquarters was the very pleasant Stevens House in Lancaster, and we traveled by motor coach, by name "Bessie," to many places of interest. We visited the Ephrata Cloisters, where was established the first Sunday School in America and had a real farm dinner with Uncle Isaac (Hyard) and his family in nearby New Holland, eating until, as these people say, your stomach "Ouch's You." We visited the beautiful home of President James Buchanan, called "Wheatland," where a member of the Junior League told us of its history. We visited the Donegal Church and Witness Tree. This church is a local shrine of Presbyterianism. At one end of the church stands the famous tree under which the Donegal members pledged allegiance to the Colonies in the War for Independence.

We also attended an Old Mennonite Church service, visited the Hershey Museum, saw the Cornwall Furnace, a historic charcoal iron furnace, and many more fascinating places--all in one weekend. Of course, we met Brooklynites, former Brooklynites and friends of Brooklynites. With us were Miss Helen D. Wilson of 640 79th Miss Madeline M. Stewart of Hollis; Mr.

and Mrs. Edward Riley of Rockville Centre, formerly of Brooklyn; Mrs. Christine Hess of Lindenhurst, a former Brooklynite; Mrs. Gertrude Benson and Mrs. Gerda Nordstrom of Long Island City, and the Misses Augusta and Bertha Bunger of Richmond Hill.

Even our tour director, Paul Pedro; our Pennsylvania Dutch instructor, Isaac Franck, and our bus driver, John Calabrese, had friends in Brooklyn and now they have Kathryn Ann Reynolds a few more. Will be Wed to James K. Norton The engagement of Miss Kathryn Ann Reynolds, daughter of Mrs. Charles G. Reynolds of 94 Rutland Road, to James Kathryn Ann Reynolds K.
