Si ems. Charles G. Weber, Melville S. Whelan, Solo Hansley, Thomas Heaiy, Kusseu nerman, Lawrence Horatman, Israel Levlne, John Mackin, Harry Markowitz, Frank Martin, Herbert Milheiser, George Morrison, William Polster, Fred Steele, Edward Warren, John Singing Gounod's stately anthem, "Praise Ye the Father," 230 graduates of the Brooklyn Training School for Teachers last night marched into the auditorium of the school on Park and Prospect places, which was packed with their friends and relatives, to the seats reserved for them. It was dig-nifleSl and inspiring, and was In keeping with the exercises which followed.

Jliss Emma L. Johnston, the principal, presided, and beside her on the platform were William G. Wlllcox, president of the Board of Education; John Greene, member of (he board, without whom such an occasion would be incomplete, and Arthur S. Somers, who has been a stanch friend of the school and whom every graduate knows. There were also Mrs.

Greene, Mrs. Willcox, District Superintendent Edward W. Stitt and the members of the faculty. Miss Johnston, In her introductory remarks, recalled the fact that it was in September, 1914, when the class entered the school, at the time when the nations of Europe had plunged into war, and the people here were shocked at what seemed the collapse of civilization. At that first assembly of the class she had urged them to keep their minds on their own tasks and had quoted a paraphrase of a quaint poem, some of the sentences of which she repeated last night.

The principal also read from letters she had received from principals of elementary schools In which the pupil-teachers had taught, praise for their excellent work, their courtesy, their loyalty and enthusiasm. Mr. Greene, after presenting the diplomas to the graduates, made an impressive address in which he said that they were now going out of the Training School to begin their actual greatest trust the State or the city could repose in anyone, because they were to mold the characters and lives of the future citizens. By the beauty of their behavior they would reflect credit on the school and on the principal and faculty. President Willcox, in the course of his address, pointed out that "as civilization and social conditions become more and more intense there is less and less room for lazy or Inefficient people, but there is an ever-increasing demand for efficiency and power." These are some sentences from his address: Work the Greatest Blessing in Life, Says Mr.

Willcox. "Work is the greatest blessing in life. As a general rule it is safe to say that if we do not enjoy our work it Is usually because we are not doing it well. If you do not find real pleasure in your work you need not look far afield for the cause, for it probably lies within yourself. "I wish we had a yardstick or an X-ray, or a chemical analysis for measuring a teacher's enthusiasm, sympathy and personal magnetism, for I should like to put these qualities far ahead of any written or oral examinations in determining eligibility.

"The success of teaching and the joy of teaching are found not in merely imparting knowledge but in influencing and inspiring the development of character. For this you must love your work and you must love your pupils; more than this, you must win and hold their confidence. "Children are keen judges of character. If a teacher is not perfectly fair and sincere, if she is not perfectly honest and straightforward, if she is not unselfishly devoted to her work, no one will notice it quicker than they. If a teacher's pupils do not love her and trust her, she is mising one of the greatest factors in her success and it is probably her own fault." Miss Johnston said that it had been a custom to have Dr.

Maxwell say the parting word, but in his absence she would call upon "one of our own people" to say it, and introduced Mr. Som-ors, who was received with hearty applause. As a "substitute" he did well, eulogizing the City Superintendent, in whose place he spoke. There was no school in the city of which Dr. Maxwell thought so much or had done so much for, as the Brooklyn Training School for Teachers, said Mr.

Somers. He urged the teachers to bring to their work much kindness and to get the love of the boy or girl, for then they could do anything with them. Between the speeches the graduates sang delightfully, under the leadership of Professor Lambert, "How Sweet the Moonlight Sleeps Upon This Bank" and "I Know a Bank." Long List of Honor Students.
