A. SOPER DIES AT 78; Basil Harris, 58, EXPOSED 'TYPHOID MARY' Ship Firm Head Southampton, June 18-Dr. George Albert Soper, one of the most noted sanitary engineers in this country, who, perhaps was best known discovery of the famous typhoid carrier, "Typhoid Mary," died yesterday at the Southampton Hospital. He was 78 and in recent years had been living at the home, of a Cedar son, Grove, George A. Hampton Soper Bays.

Born in New York City, Dr. Soper was graduated in 1895 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with the degree of B. and in 1898 received his Master's Degree from Columbia University. A year later he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia. Early in his career Dr.

Soper began to specialize in filtration work, traveling to many parts of the country as engineer for the Cumberland Manufacturing Company. In 1900 following the Galveston flood which some 5,000 lives were lost a property damage of 000, he was sent to the stricken city as sanitary reconstruction work. Two years later. because of his success there, he was made sanitary engineer of the New York City Department of Health. In 1904 authorities at Oyster Bay were puzzled because of a series of typhoid outbreaks there and in Sands Point as well as in Tuxedo Park.

Repeated investigations of food and water supply failed to reveal the cause of the outbreak. Dr. Soper was finally called in. He visited the homes in which there had been typhoid fever and found that Mary Mallon had been employed by them cook. In each place she had worked, save one, there had typhoid, he found.

The cook, later known as Typhoid Mary, was found to be a chronic, typhoid carrier, although immune herself. He ordered her confined and in 1938 she died at North Brother Island in the East River. From 1906 to 1914 Dr. Soper was on the Metropolitan Sewerage Commission of New York City, and in that capacity was responsible for a comprehensive plan to improve the city's sewerage disposal facilities. He sought vigorously to keep New York City's streets clean and the surrounding the municipality clear of garbage.

At his suggestion covered auto trucks for the collection ashes and garbage were introduced in New York. Through his efforts a modern system of ventilating the subways was awash introduced, and in 1923 named managing director of the American Society for Control of Cancer. He was the author of many articles on the subject. Throughout his long career he studied sanitary conditions abroad. and was called upon at different times to aid in the suppression of epidemics in various, parts of this country.

World War I Dr. served as a major in the Sanitary Corps of the Army. Hel was a member of numerous seientific and engineering societiResides his son. George Dr. Soper is survived by his widow.

Hyland, Founder Of Bayside Catholic Church A solemn mass of requiem, for the Rev. Joseph J. Hyland, 56, will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the R. C.

Church of St. Robert Bellarmine, 56th Ave. and 214th Bayside, of which he was pastor. There will be a children's mass at 8:15 a.m. Sunday and at 10 a.m.

Monday Divine Office will be chanted. Monsignor James J. McCowan of St. Gregory's Church will be the celebrant. The eulogy will be by the Rev.

Edward Lodge Curran. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery Father Hyland, who established the Bayside parish in 1939, died Wednesday night at the home of relatives in the Park Slope section. He had been ill a year. Born in Manhattan, Nov.

19, 1891, the son of the late Francis V. and Mrs. Honora Hyland, Father Hyland was educated at St. Francis College and St. John's Seminary and at Salamanca, Spain.

He was ordained Sept. 20, 1919, and was assigned as an assistant to St. James Pro-Cathedral. In was transferred to the Church of the Transfiguration, and in June, 1925, was assigned to St. Charles Borromeo's Church.

Appointed to the faculty of Cathedral College in 1926, he remained there until Oct. 17, 1936, when he was appointed pastor of St. John's Church, Center Moriches. He served there until Jan. 7, 1939, when he went to Bayside.

Surviving are two brothers, Francis V. Hyland of Jamaica, and John Hyland of St. Albans. Ben Zion Rosen, Charles A. Barton, Father of 2 Rabbis Edison Executive Ben Zion Rosen, who had two sons and two grandsons in the Army Chaplains Corps, died yesterday in Beth El hospital at the age of 75 and was buried later in the day in Mt.

Judea Cemetery. He resided at 1907 Sterling Place. Mr. Rosen was a founder of Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin and the Bikur Cholim Society, both of Brooklyn. He was born in Russia and came to this country 42 years ago.

His chaplain sons were the late Rabbi Henry L. Rosen and Habbi Nathan N. Rosen. The Grandsons are Rabbi Isadore Feldbin and Rabbi Solomon Rosen. Another son, and two daughters, Mrs.

Basil Harris, 58, chairman of the board of the United States Lines and a figure in American shipping for more 35 years, died early today at the Presbyterian Medical Center, Manhattan, after an illness of one month.

A solemn high requiem mass will be said at the Church of the Resurrection, 115 E. 74th Manhattan, on Monday at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla. A noted Catholic layman, Mr. Harris was a close associate of Pope Pius He toured the United States with him before his elevation to the Papacy.

He received the order of Knight of Malta, one the highest Catholic lay honors, from Pope Pius XI in 1935. Mr. Harris was born in Pullman, 111. He was graduated from Princeton University in 1912. Between September, and July, 1940, he served as sistant Secretary of the Treasury and Commissioner of Customs.

He was president of the United States Lines from 1942 to 1945, when he was elected chairman of the board. Mr. Harris is survived by the widow, Mrs. Mary Dempsey Harris; two sons, Dr. Basil and Richard L.

Harris; a brother, Gordon; a sister, Mrs. Frederick King of Irvington-on-Hudson, N. and six grandchildren. Bohack Finance Plan Up for Vote A plan for the recapitalization of H. C.

Bohack Co. Inc. will be sumbitted for approval by the stockholders at a special meeting July 28, it was announced today by Henry Schmidt, president of the chain food store organization, following a meeting of the board of directors. Under the proposed plan, Mr. Schmidt explained, holders of the present first preferred stock would receive cash dividends aggregating approximately $225,000, and in addition 1.4 shares of' a new prior cumulative preferred stock for each share of the present first preferred.

Dividend arrears on second preferred stock. they aggregating 130,500, would be paid in cash. Thus, after consummation of the plan there would be no outstanding arears of dividend on either class of the company's preferred stock. The board of directors would be increased from 9 to 12 and representation on the board would be accorded to the common stock, heretofore, not represented on the board. The plan has been worked out with and informally approved by representatives of large stockholder groups, Mr.

Mr. DeVito, born in Brooklyn to George and Grace De Vito, was a graduate of Boys High School, and was employed for Name Society. He had left home a week ago to attend a business convention in Chicago and had been expected home yesterday. Mr. Winikoff, 37, had been with Berke Bakeries since before the war and was its vice president in charge of sales.

He was married and is survived by his wife, Toby, and a son, David, 3. He had served three years in the army during the war. He was returning by plane from a week's business trip to Chicago, where his concern operates a plant.
