Long Island City, upon which the assessment is also based, deducted from that amount. The countess was not in court, and was probably rcclinfns in her chateau on the outskirts of Paris, when George Black-well, the attorney, who lo after her interests in America, tried to convince lhe court that she should be granted that little favor. Justice Cran however, decided that the law was neither retroactive nor applicable, and denied th writ. A. D.

NAPIER WILL PROVED. Christ Church, In Sixth Ward, Brooklyn, Gets $3,000 Legacy. Riverhead, L. June 21 The will of Alexander D. Napier of Sag Harbor and Brooklyn was probated here, yesterday.

Allan Napier, brother, is given Mary VV. Napier, sister, Sara B. Reid, widow's niece, Christ Church In the Sixth Ward. Brooklyn, $3,000, the-income to be used for the church and chapel; residue to widow for life use, then to Arthur Howell Napier, grandson, Charles Dwight Napier of 100 Lafayette avenue, Brooklyn: Laura Howell Dwight, daughter, and Alexander W. Napier, in equal shares.

The petition for probate has the formal statement that the value of the e-state is upward of $10,000. Mr. Napier was a wealthy summer resident of Sac Harbor. SWINDLER BUSY IN SUFFOLK. Acts Like Man Who Buncoed a Hicks Street Resident.

Editor Brooklyn Daily Eagle: 1 read an account of a swindler on the twentieth page of tonight's Eagle, fifth column. No description of the man was published, neither the name of the Hicks street victim, so I am writing to say that an elderly man with long, straight, gray hair was in this vicinity about two months ago, representing that he was looking for a nice farm for his grandson, who, on account of change of Administration at Wasuingtun had resigned his position In the Agricultural Department and was going into market gardening. He said be was a Grand Army man, also a Mason. He claimed that in gettiu out of or Into the wagon he had hired, he lost a wallet containing $32 and somo valuable papers, and hadn't money to take him to his home in New Jersey, giving a fictitious address as well as a mtltioiiR name. He gave Phil Kearney Post of Morristown as his G.

A. R. Post. end Salem Lodge as his Masonic lodge. He said his name was Wood, and asked me.

as a G. A. R. man, to loan him enough money to take him home, a matter of about $5, and got it. 1 since learned that he bad previously told the same story, but gave his name as Doty, to Frank Doxsee of Bay Shore, from whom ho got $6.

He is evidently a well-eehi-cnted mnn and talks slowly and carefully and uses fine language. He gave tho impression that he was well-to-do at home, although not wealthy, and said to both of us that he would send a check as soon as he got home. The language, appearance and apparent candor of the man led us to gl him what he asked for. The fact that tok Brooklyn fraud wauted to purchase farm for a relatlvo seemed so much like our swindler, that I am writing to know If the descripton I give is anything llk that of the Hicks street swindler, and if he is captured we would like to be in formed, so wo can try to identify hlui a our man. If you will give this matter your at tention, or call it to the attention of an interested party, who will commuolcato with us.

it may put an end to his swindling for a time at least. He said he was a pensioner, 73 years old. and setting a monthly pension of $30. W. J.

WHEELER. Islip, I June IS, IMS'. BASMUJOTES George Crowther, the brilliant shortstop of the Brown University baseball team. has decided to join the professional ranks and will report to the New Haven club of the Eastern Association at oucc. Slim Sallee was at his best when he trimmed the Cubs, letting them down with five hits.

Oakes' triple tn the sixth together with three singles and two stolen bases proved to be the undoing of the Cubs. "Heinie" Zimmerman and Roger Bies- nahan gut mixed up on a hit ball in the St. Louis-Cub game and Heinie lest his head again. He will have a hard time collecting the other half of the $1U0 bill now. The Yanks made it four straight.

The Senators were taken completely by surprise and hits rained off the Yanks' bats all during the afternoon. Fisher ana Sehultz were the Yankee boxmen, and their work was of a high order. Jack Warhon started to twirl the first game for the Yanks yesterday, but the heat was too much for the pitcher and he gave way to Fisher in the seventh Inning. The Washington fans yelled themselves ho.irse for Johnson, but the only public appearance of the speedy twirler was in the second game wncn bo batted for Hughes. Fromme continues to get In most of the Giants' games either as a starter or relief pitcher.

He has worked In about five games during the past week. BROOKLYN BOYS GOING INTO CAMP. Seventy-five boys, members of the Sunday School Athletic Leacue and the Central Y. M. C.
