Co-operative saving? and l-an associations are tutiaeting more attention and making more substantia! progress in this Btate than ever before in tUeir history, as shown by reports of these organizations received from all over the state by officers of the State ami Metropolitan League? of Co-operative Savings ami Loan Associations. The official Etatis-ries for of iiie State Banking Department (which has these institutions under Its jurisdiction have not yet been issued, but it is known that the assets will reach an increase of over 19ns. The figures, however, do not indicate all the growtn. as these institutions are maturing stork eontinual- and paving out lump sums of money to their members; thus in W. was paid oui to matured stock members alone, and to other members.

These statistics refer solely to purely oeal institutions. Men and women who are interested in good citizenship and that form of philanthropy which believes in helping those who help themseles are beginning to realize that a well-managed savings and loon association is a positive benefit to any community These organizations promote habits of thrift through the savings of small amounts of money systematically, and help the man of sjnall means to own his home. Their assets are first mortgages on members homes, and these members ore reducing their mortgages at regular intervals thus securities of well-managed institutions are aB stable as government bonds. It is evident that eo-operaiive savings and loan associations are helpful to self-respecting persons of moderate means and supply a need, as official figures show that among the thousands of mortgages held by them during the last twenty years the average single mortgage was less than $2,000 The man or woman who can save even $2 a month is a desirable member, and there are more than small savers through these Institutions in this stat who are "casting an anchor to windward" by getting a little money together.
