20-Henry Hands, retired printer nicknamed "Ancient Mariner" by associates in the Brooklyn years Eagle ago, composing died last room night many. a his home, 21 Park Ave. The nickname became quite an adequate description in 1948, however, when Mr. Hands was invited to inspect the Queen Elizabeth. He was 87 at the time-the oldest living man who had shipped as a bound apprentice on a White Star' line sailing vessel, the bark Esmeralda.

Mr. Hands was born in Shrewsbury, England, on Jan. 22, 1861. He signed on the Esmeralda when he was 15 and made four trips around Cape Horn on her. When he quit the sea for the printing trade and residence in Brooklyn seven years later, he was second mate of the Nova Scotia bark, Kestrel.

Mr. Hands came to the Brooklyn Eagle in 1892 and served until February, 1912, when he went to Scientific Press where he worked another two decades, retiring at the age of 72. since Hands first reresident. of Massapequa sided in the downtown section of Brooklyn and ganize the Cuyler Presbyterian Church. Most of his Broc' 1 residence, however, was in the Homecrest section, and he.

was active in the affairs of the Homecrest Presbyterian Church, In Massapequa he was active in the Men's Club of Grace Episcopal Church. He was a member of "Big since 1905. Surviving are his wife, Alice: a daughter, Mrs. Roger C. Hough, and two grandchildren, Donald Doris Hough.

The body is reposing at the Massapequa Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Grace Episcopal Church, Merrick Road. Burial in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Caldwell, N. J.

Mrs. Joost died Friday at her home, 25 Monroe Place. She had spent her entire life in Brooklyn. Her husband, vice president of the Bond and Mortgage Guarantee Company, and a director of the Title Guarantee Trust Co. and the Franklin Trust died in 1920.

Mr. Joost was a representative on the boards of a number of other financial institutions, and also was a director of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. Surviving are two sons. Sher. man Brownell Joost of Quogue, a member of the New York Stock Exchange, and Arthur Martin Joost of Southold: five grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services for Edmond M. Dewan, 62, president of the Edmond M. Company, Manhattan, manufacturers, porters and designers of textiles, will be held at 8 tonight at the Fox Funeral Home, Ascan and Metropolitan Forest Hills. Mr. Dewan, who lived at 54 Ingram Forest Hills, died Thursday in Kew Gardens Hospital.

Surviving are his wife, Alma: a son, Edmond a daughter, Denise, and a brother, Leon. Frank Salerno, owner of a barbershop at 4607 Avenue and father of Al Salerno, Brooklyn Eagle staff writer, died Friday in his home at the Avenue address. Mr. Salerno, who was born in Reggio, Calabria, on Dec. 24.

1886, emigrated to Buenos Aires after serving in the Italian cavalry. About 45 years ago he came to this country, establishing his residence in Brooklyn. He was well-known in the Borough Hall section, having worked from 1912 to 1927 in a barbershop on Washington near the junction of Washington Fulton St. and Ave. After 1939 he established shops of his own in Flatbush and Flatlands.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Commisio. Salerno, with whom he recently celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary; another son, Frank two daughters, Mrs. Mollie Pedone and Mrs. Lillian Sirico, and seven grandchildren, Christopher Salerno, William Sirico, Michael and Frank Pedone, and Virginia, Stephen and Barbara Salerno.

The body is at the Torregrossa Funeral Home, 79th St. and 13th Ave. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Thomas Aquinas R.
