At Richmond and Philadelphia maximum readings nf 105 degrees were recorded. At Norfolk, Washington. Baltimore. Harrlsburg and Atlantic City the temperature reached 104 degrees, and at New York, Albany, Fcranton it touched 102 degrees. This breaks all previous Weather Bureau records for this city.

The previous high record being 100 degrees Septemmer 7, ISfil. The Central Park station yesterday recorded 104 degrees, 3 degrees above the previous high record. Local thunder showers occurred In this vicinity late last night, giving some rnlief, though the minimum this morning is but 2 degrees lowe rthan yesterday. Mrs. NUUliLMAN, Uews t. 8-7 First Exhibit at Carleton Ave. Branch is Interesting. The first annual exhibition of books, manuscripts, paintings, engravings and sculpture by the Negro Library Association took place last night at the Carlton Avenue Branch of the Y.

M. C. A. The exhibit is a comprehensive one The paintings include cover designs In oil, an Easter cover, "Lead Kindly Light," and illustrations by Burghardt Du William Edward Scott, K. H.

Hampton and Richard Lonsdale Brown, all of whom show originality. The modern Art Gallery of Manhattan loaned masks and statues done by ancient Africans, showing that the Cubists and Futurists got inspiration from these. The oil painting by S. Collins "Autumn," is full of feeling; "Ancient Memories," also by Mr. Collins, Is to be praised.

Laura Wheeler shows "Russian Ballet," "In the Luxembourg Gardens" and other art effectively. Robert H. Lewis Se Portrait," "Welcome News," portrait of Mrs. Gale and a "Scene In the Park" show excellent technique. Albert Smith's "Music" and his cartoons are effective pieces.

Ella Spencer and A. M. Thompson In landscape and marine show good work. Ernf' Braxton Is shown in two admirable exhibits, a portrait of Poushkin and "The Good Book," also in pen sketches. O.

Thompson shows chalk drawings, a large illustration In allegorical style. There is a collection of books written by negro authors, which Is interesting. Some large photographs taken at Tuskagee Institute of "types" there, and of other themes, is well worth examining. The almanacs compiled and printed by Benjamin Banne-ker, a slave, in 1792, are highly Interesting. The poems of Phyllis Wheat-ley, a well-known negro poet, printed in London in 1773, and for yeais later, are shown both in manuscripts and print.

Alexander Qrummell, i minister living in the Nineteenth Century, is represented by his address before Hamilton Lyceum in 1844, and many other articles of literary merit. The engraving of a Catholic Bishop of Ethiopia, Abbas Gregorious, is also Fhown. commander-in-chief of the Haytian army, General Toussaint, Is instanced by famous proclamations.
