SHIPBUILDERS Walter D. Crane, dean of Newl York Harbor's shipbuilders and ship repairers and manager of Bethlehem Steel Company's Brooklyn 27th St. shipyard, Heights Hospital. was 75. yesterday "he Prospect Mr.

Crane, who lived with his wife at 1402 Beverly Road, was born in Brooklyn and was a descendant of one of the borough's earliest families. His father, Theodore A. Crane, was one of the pioneers in the shipbuilding business here and founded the 27th St. yard shortly after the Civil War. still in his teens Mr.

Crane worked in his father's shipyard during Summer vacations. His career officially started in 1895, following his father's death, when he took a full time job at the yard. His first task was spinning oakum, a caulking material, for which he received $3 for a 60-hour 6- day, week. He marked the start of his 55th year in the business last July 2 and was active in the affairs of the yard until less than two weeks ago, when he became ill. Mr.

Crane became president of the Theodore A. Crane Sons, successor to his father's firm, in 1919, and in 1929 was named of the yard when that organization merged with United Dry Docks, Inc. He retained that position when the Bethlehem Steel quired the United Companion properties in 1938. He is survived by his wife, Alice Bishop Crane; two sons, James B. Brooklyn and Theodore A.

of Lake Success, assistant manager of the yard; a daughter, Mrs. Florence Cruikshank of Paris; two brothers, Frank H. and Wilbur H. of Brooklyn, both of whom are associated with the yard, and three sisters, Mrs. George W.

Mr. Drennan, who retired in 1926, was a brother of the late Thomas J. Drennan, one time Commissioner of Jurors of County and for more than eight years the city's Fire Commissioner. Two other brothers, John and Martin, and his wife, the former Rose V. Cole, also predeceased him.

Mr. Drennan, who lived at 140 Hewes was a member of the Seneca Democratic Club and the Eckford Club. He was well known in fraternal, political and philanthropic circles. For many years he was active in the Brooklyn Lodge of Elks. He was a lifelong resident of Williamsburg.

Since most piers can handle 100 trucks an hour on a busy day, this amounts to a sizable hunk of cash. Lucrative Food Thefts The Brooklyn Eagle learned that the most profitable racket in the vast amounts of foods that disappear from ship cargoes at the piers. Favorite targets of- racketeering thefts are the shippers of canned pineapples. One informant told this newspaper that "300 or 400 cases can disappear like nothing from a pier." The stolen food is sold for a fraction of its value. Standard price for a case of canned pineapple is $1.
