NEW YORK. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21. 1917. 13 United Jewry Will Solve Problem of Helping Poor The past two weeks' campaign for funds from Jews of this borough has brought to the attention of Brooklynites certain conditions that have been pointed out during the past ten years in this department of The Eagle. In interviews with prominent Jews of this country and in special articles in this department it was shown that Brooklyn in Its attack on the charitable, educational and religious prob.

lems of this borough was provincial, because the large Jew population of the borough was not united and did not The operate. needs of the Jewish co population of this borough, It was shown, were the answers to such conditions that big drive revealedunity of purpose by orthodox and reformed, Jews Jews, of Jews every of section every of nation- the borough, for one purpose- the proper care of the sick, needy and orphaned Jews of this borough. The problem of insufficient Jewish education of boys and girls in this borough was shown to be appalling. The religious schools as conducted were far from sufficient in the matter of accommodations or efficient in method of It was indicated in a series of articles that either the wealthy congregations of the borough must meet this pressing problem or the future of the Jewish people in this borough is nothing but a matter of days, The burning question in Brooklyn Jewry is the indifference of the Jewish young men and the ignorance of the Jewish boys girls in matters of Jewish history, ethics, customs and traditions. With a united Jewry, with the doing away of all duplication, the waste of money, energy, and having the financial problems of all charitable and educational institutions solved by a.

Women of the Fourth Assembly District demonstrated to the men voters of the district last night that they intend to take a hand henceforth in things political in that district.

The Women's Democratic of the Fourth Assembly District held its initial public meeting in the rooms of the Seneca Democratic Club, at Bedford avenue and Taylor street. For reasons best known to themselves they invited the members of the Seneca. Club to be present. Perhaps the reason was that they feared they would not have a very large crowd without the men. Their fears were all dispelled shortly after doors of the club were opened, thia by the time the meeting was well under way there was hardly a man to be seen, while the front and rear parlors of the club probably held 300 women, with many of them sitting in the lobby and on the stairs, while the men had to suffice themselves with cigars in the upper rooms or in the basement.

One by one the men departed until the only three men in the parlors were Deputy County Clerk Thomas J. Drennan, the executive member, who was a to preside: Congressman James P. Maher and Charles I. Stengle, Leader Drennan in his address of welcome said that he had a been authorized by the Democratic organization to extend to the ladies the freedom of the clubhouse for any night they might see fit; also the smaller rooms for committee meetings, ete. He said he was glad to know there were 80 many women Democrats in his district as it augured well for the success of the ticket at the gubernatorial election next fall.

Dr. Laura M. Riegelmann, sister of Borough President-elect Riegelmann, to whom Mr. Drennan extended the chairmanship of the meeting, said that it was not a part of the program for her to make a speech, but that she had invited Charles I. Stengle, who had been a fighter for the equal suffrage cause for the past twenty-five years, to make an address on "Organization and Enrollment." Mr.

Stengel spoke of his experience in seeking to get votes which he always considered the women had deserved, and said that in his own family there were now two Republican votes while his was the only Democratic one. He said that the men and women were now equals and that it behooved the men to talk with their wives on the issues of the campaign on a. fifty-fifty basis. He said the two great twins which were born on November were Opportunity and Responsibility and that the women must take advantage of both of them. Borough President-elect Riegelmann was a late arrival.

He apologized for his tardiness, saying that he other engagements which also had to be attended to, but that he was glad to see such an outpouring of women Democrats. He intimated that his slate had already been completed, but would not say whether or not the new voters were to be given representation on it. Miss Amy Wren also spoke. She congratulated the women of the Fourth Assembly District on their great showing and urged them to use their now power to the greatest advantage. Others who spoke along the same lines were Congressman James T.

Maher, Assemblyman Peter McArdle and Assemblyman Alexander Bassett. MARCY AVENUE CHURCH. To Give Special Christmas Music on Sunday Next.
