May 20, IMS. I.WrASTKR MORGAN, Trennnrer. COFFEE MARKET In the absence of any demand of consequence, coffee prices this morning Bagged 2 to 6 points. Trading was on a very small scale, even for a Saturday, and the entire trade appeared to be in a waiting attitude. There was an undertone of bullishness prevalent In the market.

The near positions are steadily gaining strength, and It is felt that the July shorts are covering, and that both the large interests here and Kuropean Interests will take up considerable coffee on July contracts. The easiness in the later positions, it Is claimed, has been due to the putting out of hedges against the purchases of July. The visible supply statement for the month of April is expected to show a rather large decrease, present guesses ranging from 750,000 to 800,000 bags. During the month there has been a marked decrease in the Brazilian stocks. Should such a decrease occur, tho visible supply as of May 1 will be well below nine million bags, whereas a year ago it was in excess of twelve million hugs, when a decrease of 52 3,000 bags was recorded during April.

Kio yesterday lost 75 rels, while Pnntos remained unchanged. Receipts continued liberal, hut the Santos stock lost 58,000 bags, and now holds only 607,000 bags, against 1,180,000 last year. In the local spot market there is said to be a fairly good demand for good Santos coffees, which are at a premium. Cost-and-freight business with Brazil continues very limited. lii'tizlHun Coffee Kooelpls.

SAFE DEPOSIT VAULTS COTTON MARKET The cotton market was under pres sure and sold off about 10 points. This decline was due to the Improved weather conditions. The feared rains did not materialize in the West, while there were some rains in the Southeast and the cables were disappointing. The weakness in the Liverpool mar ket was reported due in part to a lower market for Egyptian cotton and to the more favorable American advices. A study of the weather map save some promise of further precipitation in the Southeast, while rain was shown at only a few points in Texas.

The reports as to acreage snowea very little change in the indications. The details of Miss Giles report show a falling off in Texas of 15 per cent, and a total area of about 31,000,000 acres comoared with 37.452,000 last year. She reports the amount of plant ing done at 38 per cent, compared with 84 per cent, last year and 40 per cent, two years ago. These figures would tend to indi cate that the claims of lateness of the season were really no material claims. It seems to be very popular to claim that the season is late, and such claims appear to mean very little.

An analysis of the weeK enu statis tics showed that the amount of the crop which has come into sight is now very nearly as largo as a year ago, the deficit being only 184,000 bales; but spinners takings are 1,546,000 bales less. Cotton values failed to recover ap preciably in the final dealings. The best support came from the short in terest. Week-End Figures. The Chronicle's weekly cotton weather reports Indicate that rain lias been quite general In the Southwest and rather heavy at some points during the week, but that elsewhere little or no rain has fallen, Texas advices are to the effect that recent heavy rains In northern sections will necessitate some replanting, but that elsewhere in the Rtata conditions are favorable. Krom portions of the Allnntln and liulf districts and from Memphis there are soino romplnhits that moisture Is needed to bring up seed. The chronicle's weekly Manchester cable states that the home trade is fair, and that South Amerlcsu denism! is Improving; yarns show a a declining tendency. Coltou Movement.
